Hlg Scorpion 600 vs hlg 600r?

Love the idea of light hitting most plants from multiple angles with the scorpion and low hanging height but wanting to know if the light penetration isn’t as deep as it is with the 600r. I set my plants up to produce quality buds probably around 18” below canopy..some plants maybe up to a few feet down below canopy. Want to cover a 4x4 with best potential yield.. Any thoughts

I've been asking around about the scorpion as well. From what I understand, the scorpion's diffused lighting lowers the penetration intensity, but allows the light to be placed closer to the canopy.

What concerns me the most is that the scorpion and 600r have the same heat output, approximately 2048 btu., as a 600w HPS. I run a 600w air cooled hood in my 3x3 and temperature will climb a little. I wouldn't dare run an open hood 600W HPS in my 3x3. So, what would be the best way to manage the heat? That's what I'm trying to learn.

probably getting an extension cord on your driver and then mounting it outside of your tent

I’ve decided I’m going to get the optic slim 650 instead of hlg. The optic is a beast and runs cool. Great specs.

I run a Scorpion Rspec and have heat the same room that required cooling with a 630 cmh. Iirc I couldn’t even finf over 95f anywhere on the heatsink or driver.

Good to know! I have my 630w cmh sitting in storage. Just way too much heat output for me in a tent. When I did run the CMH in a 5x5 tent I had to A/C the room and vent out another window. Too much power consumption for me.

I got a 315 cmh with an hlg 550 in same 5x5 tent. Temp in winter is 75-77. Not sure how it's gonna be summer time.

Was gonna go with optic slim 650 but now thinking I’m gonna do the hlg 650r.
Don't know if you pulled the trigger yet but this place has decent prices on HLG lights.

I have a 630 cmh in a 4x4 and the key to lowering temps is pretty much universal, increase vent fan cfm. Plenty of circulation inside the tent helps too. I find my temps are fine unless my room temp hits 80, so winter, spring, fall, no issue, summer, AC during the day and flower at night (vent outside). You should be fine with that LED if you have a big enough vent fan.

I know a guy on IG who can provide up to a 20% discount on HLG fixtures depending on promotions. I purchased a Scorpion Diablo from him and saved over 20% during the Black Friday weekend. My Scorpion was shipped directly from HLG. I also have a 650R and like both fixtures but I like the light spread of the Scorpion 600 in my 5x5 tent. DM me and I can give you the guy's name on IG.

You guys mind a question about these LEDs?
The link to the HLG lights above has some nice prices and they look great. I have 1000 watts of Samsung LM301H boards (four 250 watt drivers each powering two 125 watt boards). I'm looking to add more LEDs.
The first light for $899 has six boards with a 600 watt driver; that's 100 watts per board.
The second light for $699 has four boards with the same 600 watt driver; that's 150 watts per board.
That's 50 watts difference per board between the two, at least in my mind. Am I wrong on that?
I had a Spider Farmer SF2000 and it only had 200 watts for two boards and it wasn't nearly as bright a light as my other LEDs at 250 watts.
As far as I know spectrum and intensity are the most important factors for flowering lights.
I'm not trying to crap on these lights or anyone who has one but in my mind the second light for $699 would be better for flowering; am I wrong on that?

I believe that the 6 boards with a greater coverage are underdriven to be hung closer to the canopy. This should achieve a similar intensity as the higher driven 4 boards hung higher. However, the 4 boards coverage would begin to fall around the edges in a 5x5 tent, but it would be more intense in the center. Personally, I would choose the scorpion over the 600r, because I have a 5x5 tent. If the 600r plays nice in a 4x4 tent, you may get better results. Both lights have the same spectrum.

Does the scorpion cover a 5x5 better than the 600r? You’re talking about the 600 scorpion and not the scorpion diablo, right?

I have the hlg 650r diablo in a 5x5 and it stays around 83 at almost max with a small clip fan blowing on the driver. For me its about 10 to 15 degrees warmer than the room its in if your pulling in air from around the tent
Very Good info. Thanks man

Hi Tree1, thanks for your post describing the differences between the 600Rspec and 600R Scorpion. Would you mind to DM me the info for the HLG guy on Instagram?

I am looking to buy an HLG 600R Scorpion for my next grow - I bought a HLG 600Rspec for this grow which is an amazing light but wish I had gotten the Scorpion originally as I am running out of height (even though I have 8’ of vertical space) and keep getting light stress with the 650Rspec even at 30” from canopy and 40% dimmed. I’m thinking getting the Scorpion should resolve some of that given how you described the differences between the two lights in your post. Thank you! I would DM you but I am not able to yet since I have not posted enough.
