RSO help loosing my booze!

Yeah, when they legalized it for recreational use here, they made it a Class B felony to extract using BHO outside a permitted facility.

I can extract QWET using a fruit jar and boil off the alcohol, plus decarboxylate in an electric fondue hot oil bath to get a concentrate that will work in a cart, for under a hundred dollars, but it won't be purdy, aromatic, or tasty.

Define high quality vaping oil?? I grade mine by appearance, aroma, flavor, and effects. A major portion of the aroma, flavor, and effects are its entourage of terpenes.

If you extract with ethanol, you will need to either remove the terpenes beforehand and them back later or add terpenes from other sources post purge, for an aromatic concentrate. They typically exit with the alcohol.

I see cheap rotovapes under $600, but what chemical duty pump suitable for rotovape use have you found for a couple hundred brother?

I suggest throwing in a 2L vacuum flask and Buchner funnel.

This is what they recommend using with the cheap rotovapes, with ice added. Yeah I am still not 100% sold and am researching.

Yes my one run so far with alcohol resulted in some less than tasty oil...although it is potent AF. I do know there are a couple of talented members here that make some pretty great oil with alcohol extraction, but they have a lot of science background. Adding terpenes is something I have been reading up on. I also read Everclear is really not very pure and there are much better grades of alcohol...whether that helps, IDK.

Doesn't the Source turbo and eToh Pro suffer these same issues, since they are alcohol extractors?

I'd really love to be able to make something tasty, potent, and without adding terpenes or flavorings or VG / PG...and I'm not even sure it's possible!!

I found a nice blend, it's called e-NRG Bioethanol Fuel, 92% ethyl, 8% Iso. They can sell it because adding iso to ethanol makes it considered "denatured". It's really quite reasonably priced, I got a gallon for $40 CAD.

That pump will work fine for vacuum filtration but only achieves 0.098 megapascals vacuum, which is about -28.9" Hg, or 25,940 microns. Short path typically uses a vacuum under 20 microns.

Define tasty and potent??? A QWET without terpenes added back is still tasty, it just doesn't taste like a highly aromatic BHO extraction.

A high percentage of the carts available in the dispensaries are made using ethanol extraction below -50/70C. In the quality ones, the terpenes are extracted first, then cannabinoids, after which the terpenes are added back for aroma, flavor, and as a solvent to the cannabinoids to lower their viscoscity enough to flow in an e-pen.

The brothers and sisters producing those carts have significantly more than a $1K invested in equipment. You have to pay to play.

A concentrate without terpenes can still be potent, it just won't have the same effect as the same concentrate with terpenes, because some of the cannabis effects are due to the terpenes. It will also typically have a sweet phenolic taste, because the cannabinoids are phenols, which are alcohols.

Define yield?? Pressing extracts more non targeted elements like plant waxes, water, etc. I can increase the apparent yield with both BHO and QWET as well by soaking longer and at higher temperatures, but don't because of quality issues.

Price of herb, concentrate, and carts seems to be heavily dependent on supply and demand here locally. Bunches of folks jumped in and crashed the market, leading to plunging prices and exits from the market, leading to prices rising again seeking balance.

That also leads to plunging equipment prices, so you might also keep an eye out.

That pump won't pull low enough, so you will have to use more heat and you will end up with darker concentrates.

The glass in the cheaper systems is typically thinner and may not be fully annealed, but should work.

I would have to test the system to have any comments, but the temperature control is important, and speed control less so. If you used a better pump, it should work fine.

Yes I found that out a few days ago, they treat BHO making like making methamphetamine...I live by an old saying...Don't do the crime if you can't do the time...so no BHO for me either, and i was just offered a BHO set-up for free....albeit probably a cheapo glass one anyways.

I finally had some free time to look at this beauty and play with speed controler- I figured the fan speed would slow with -V and of course it did-to the point of stopping.

The lid plugs into the base via 6" separate extension cord and there doesn't seem to be any relation to the heating base it will heat without the cover on.

Spoiler - it's just a short PC cord, I just scrounged one and ran it independently full blast! KISS

I played around with a temp probe and fan controller for hours, but it seems to me if I have it set to almost the lowest, it still heats to 190 vs the 219 I started with.

Does it work the same or perfectly or in betwixt? IDK I've got to finish some more flowers. Maybe I'll do a video of it, but I wanted to say a THANKS! for the helpful input guys!

Hasn't anyone had this problem, don't care, or just use alcohol distillers. I don't recall it ever being mentioned.

I’ve just bought an air distiller (water distiller) to make some RSO for my dad who’s just been diagnosed with cancer. Do people recommend using rashig rings in the bottom of the still or just do it without?? I’m going to stop the still once I’ve recovered 75% of the alcohol so I don’t over do it. I will transfer the remainder to a magnetic hot plate and let the rest of the alcohol evaporate on that. I will then finish with a decarb.
I’m also looking to mix the RSO with olive oil as from what I have read the olive oil helps the RSO travel further inside the body and stops as much being wasted. I was hoping to mix them at a ration of 1:1 but I’m concerned about them separating once inside the syringes. Can anyone help??

The rings typically go in a reflux column. You can use them as boiling chips to reduce bumping.

Hot concentrate and olive oil should mix at any ratio and stay mixed.

Busted up bits of rashig rings would work fine in the bottom of a still. Anything that offers boiling points and is non-reactive to the solvent being used is fine. Mainly needed in lab glassware as SS stuff has enough boiling points to prevent bumping/overboiling.
