Dying before their time due to old medium

I don't know how these plants made it this far, considering the Tupur has been used probably more than it should have and the water is hard as hell... Some of the leaves are brown and dead like while others are green and healthy... One plant I had to get rid of because I couldn't stand to look at it anymore!!! Lesson learned??? Replace your coco after every other grow... At least that's what I'm going to do!!! And get a ph meter!!! I need to do that immediately!!!20210227_133654.jpg20210227_133701.jpg20210227_133736.jpg20210227_133740.jpg

Since Tupur isn’t coco, how do you arrive at the advice given?

What about reusing Tupur or coco makes replacing it a good idea?

~edit~ pH could be the factor. I recommend the Bluelab pH pen.

It is a form of coco... I'm saying that I'VE probably used the same stuff too much... It feels like coco when you buy it in a block and the water takes forever to soak in... All I'm saying is that it is a miracle that they made it as far as they have and I'm sure they would have been better if I had them in new coco... This stuff feels like a sponge!!! Hahaha!!! And no one told me these things, they're all self observation

The only coco I've ever tried came in a brick I found out many years later that I should have rinsed it very well to get rid of sea salt that the coconuts soak in for a long time before having the coir removed and pressed into bricks. Same kind of crappy quality control Mexican brick weed is subjected to I guess.

No coco products are available locally and 3X the price of good old ProMix HP in the city. Might just score a bag next time I'm there which may be in a couple of weeks and see how it does in a side-by-side. It just seems so much more high maintenance than a peat-based soilless product like the HP.

I tried my best pulling off dwc - did not.
Someone then convinced me to change medium to coco and perlite. For me it was alot easier and I never looked back.

Though ur comment and some others have me looking forward. Is this promix that good? How does it best coco from ur perspective?

Everything I've read about coco it needs to be watered/fed multiple times/day for best results and the best grows using it seem to be DWT, (Drain To Waste), grows top fed using a timer, pump, tubing etc.

With peat-based soilless media you soak the pots good then wait until they are near bone dry before soaking them again so depending on the pot and plant size you might not have to do anything for a week or longer. I repot 3 or 4 times before going into their final pots and once a plant needs watering in less than 48 hours I consider it time to up-pot to the next size. 4 gal is usually the largest pot I grow in and will usually have 3 - 5 days between waterings near the end.

I tend to let my plants get bigger than they should so trying to wean myself off that to speed up the cycle between crops. I have lots of 2.5gal pots that would work well for more of a SoG type growing setup.

I used to do a lot of DWC but the last couple years haven't bothered as I'm doing all sorts of different strains and getting into breeding beyond just pollen chucking. More CBD stuff and some autos for growing outside way up north here.

Thank you for ur in depth reply. Can u recycle nutrients in promix? Would u say it behaves like soil? Gotta admit watering every 3-5 days seems chill af!

Timers and pumps in coco makes it pretty low maintenance and easy to grow in. What I do miss is the chance to recycle my nutrients. Though I'm well aware that none other method give as accurate NER as DTW, so I'm not stressing about it either. Would be nice to have longer between watertank refill in winter though!

So I started by just using the brick coco I can find locally, didn't buffer it properly the first time, learnt that lesson well. But since then I learned to buffer properly and I sort of reuse my coco. I'll use it until the fibers are obviously starting the break down then I'll roughly sift the smallest fibers out and toss that into the garden or use as a germination medium. then I mix in a fresh brick of coco, usually let it all soak for a day or more to buffer it with cal-mag again, and I'm good to go for another year.

No salt in this as indicated by lack of issue. My go to. Decent price and always a satisfied purchaser after close to a dozen bricks since found. 006.jpg

I've taken to reusing my ProMix about 50/50 to make sure I have enough to get me thru this winter but forgot about the spare bale in the carport so don't really have to other than I'm poor and cheap so it saves me money. When I mix some of that up I water in lower levels of nutes as there is some left from the last grow tho not a hell of a lot as I tend to cut back on feeding the last 2 or 3 weeks. Just some K and epsom salts for the last while. I'm mainly using AN 3-part for my base nutes with some Big Bud when going into flowering.

Last Valentines day was 20 years since I moved up north here with 6 hash plant clones and there hasn't been a day when some pot plants haven't been growing in my house and I've tried a lot of things over the years. Dirt doesn't work for me so it's DWC or soilless media.

And coco/soil is the best in years here. Happy growing. Ad glad you found your method. Nice saying why instead of asking.

Best wishes.

The stuff I got was in a plain white plastic wrap hand lettered 'coco'. That was like 18 years ago and there's lots better stuff these days for sure. ProMix makes all sorts of coco blends that are ready to stick plants in but I'll never see any of that and the HP works just great straight out of the bale. Don't need to add any perlite to it like I used to do with Sunshine Mix #4 either as it has lots.

Shipping to the north here is crazy expensive so that's not a viable option either.

I'm happy with the HP and see no reason to switch to something more expensive and from what I can tell more work. Less fussing around is a big bonus to me and another good reason to stick with what works and use AN nutes so I never have to worry about pHing anything which is another bothersome chore I'm happy to do without. :)
