"the annual CPAC straw poll found that only 55% of attendees want Trump to be the Republican nominee in 2024, ahead of Florida governor Ron DeSantis at 21% (the conference is taking place in Florida), South Dakota governor Kristi Noem at 4% and former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley at 3%."
David Smith, Manchester Guardian.

Trump won't be able to hold their attention because the MAGA types have short attention spans. They are already moving on. Barely a majority at cpac. 55%

Yup. Already moved on.

Kavanaugh dismays conservatives by dodging pro-Trump election lawsuits
Justice Brett Kavanaugh dismayed conservatives this week when he cast what appears to be the deciding vote preventing the Supreme Court from taking up pro-Trump election lawsuits.

Kavanaugh’s apparent break with the court’s three staunchest conservatives — Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito and Neil Gorsuch — seemed to catch his colleagues by surprise, and provoked ire among some on the political right who viewed the move as an act of betrayal.

Thomas in a dissent said he was “befuddled” by the court’s reluctance to take up the disputes, given that four justices — including Kavanaugh — had signaled in late October their view that the pro-Trump challengers were likely to win on appeal.

New super PAC aims to support lawmakers who voted to impeach or convict Trump
A group of Republicans has launched a new super PAC that aims to provide support for GOP lawmakers who voted to impeach or convict former President Trump.

Americans Keeping Country First will serve as the sister nonprofit to Kinzinger’s own PAC, which he launched earlier this month to combat “Trumpism” and will aim to “build a grass roots army,” the Post reported, citing documents.

Founders, including allies to Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.), an outspoken critic of the former president, started the PAC, which is called Americans Keeping Country First, The Washington Post reported on Sunday.

The super PAC describes itself as the only one “dedicated solely to defending the members of Congress who took votes of conscience to impeach or convict President Trump after rioters stormed the Capitol complex on January 6th, 2021.”

Not that I am for Republicans but reasonable Republicans should get behind those that did the right thing and send a signal that the fear one man holds over the rest is their own doing. Or something like that.

They are waiting for his popularity among the base to fade a bit and for the law to get ahold of Donald, once he and some of his family are safe in prison they will make their move. They will pay homage to Donald and try to put lipstick on the pig while trying to hold onto Donald's base, if 10 or 20% of them are pissed off and don't show up to vote they are fucked, even with gerrymandering and voter suppression.

If Donald loses control of the majority of the party he will take his base out and form a new party, provided he's not in prison first. He will use his party as a grift to fleece his hardcore base for cash, getting on a ballot is not that important, getting money is though.

Ya know when Donald goes to court he should have two top notch ivy league trained lawyers, Cruz and Hawley, Donald should force the pair into defending him in court! I mean Donald will have trouble finding good legal help and these two clowns should work pro bono for the great leader. Ted did offer to go before the SCOTUS as Trump's lawyer, if they would hear the case

The specter of Trump's comeback raises a practical question

(CNN)We're going to have to talk about Donald Trump.

To be frank, it's been a relief over the last month not to spend every hour on alert for a world-rattling tweet or wondering which article of the Constitution would be crushed next.

Now Trump has made a comeback from the golf course, in an appearance that aides said would position him as the prohibitive favorite for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024. In his address to the Conservative Political Action Conference in Florida on Sunday, Trump said the "incredible journey" that he and his supporters started four years ago is "far from being over."

Trump is already plotting revenge on party members who broke with his personality cult. From his golf cart at Mar-a-Lago, he's concocting plans to destroy their careers in the run-up to the 2022 midterm elections. Whether he actually mounts a presidential campaign is open to question -- especially as his plans could be derailed by multiple legal problems. But just by looking serious about it, he could scare off potential rivals.

In purely political terms, it's easy to see why Republican lawmakers stick with Trump -- especially those in gerrymandered districts whose only threat is a primary challenge from a more radical foe. He's still wildly popular among Republican grassroots voters, who see him as the guardian of a traditional, conservative America run by White people.

But the specter of Trump's comeback raises a practical question: Does anything justify another Trump presidency? He left the country in a shambles, overwhelmed by a pandemic he barely acknowledged during his last months in power. His nepotistic administration left America more divided than at any point since the Civil War. And he almost buckled US democracy itself, deceiving his supporters into believing that he had been cheated in a free and fair election. People died because of the mob that he raised outside the Capitol.

After all that, the fact that Trump is still seen as a credible leader by much of his party (even after losing the White House, the House and the Senate) tells you a lot about the soul of Republicanism and the state of American politics itself.

McConnell saying he will support Trump for 2024? He is much too smart to think Trump can stay out of trouble for that long. Easy to promises something you know you will not need to deliver.
Mitch's problem is Donald will run for the nomination right from his prison cell and win it, if he doesn't win it, he will say he was cheated and pull his base out of the party. I dunno how Trump would pull it off though, since he and everybody around him will be in prison or court and it's difficult to communicate to the outside from inside a maximum security cell. Donald will do his time at a maximum security facility too, the death threats the judge and jury will receive and his large terrorist following will assure it, no club fed for Donald.

they were starting to wonder where 'the proof' was on YT and in print..they could tell something was up.

the crowd at Confederate Political Action Committee was so empty the audience was dark with little panning by cameras- the illusion continues.

Trump: Rally before Capitol breach was 'lovefest' and a 'beautiful thing'
“It was tremendous numbers of people, not the Capitol, I’m talking about the rally itself. It was a lovefest. It was a beautiful thing,” Trump said told Steve Hilton on Fox News.

During a "Stop the Steal" rally on the National Mall, Trump urged thousands of his supporters to march on the Capitol and pressure lawmakers not to finalize Joe Biden's Electoral College victory. He told the crowd display "strength" that day or risk losing the country.

"You'll never take back our country with weakness," Trump said at the time.

He also claimed he wanted 10,000 National Guard troops to be sent to the Capitol ahead of the rally, but "heard [Congressional leadership] rejected it because it didn't look good."

Trump said in a video message the night after the breach that he "immediately deployed the National Guard and federal law enforcement to secure the building and expel the intruders."

The Fear of Trump is another Big Lie..they're not afraid of his mob they want his mob to vote for them once he's gone.

any one of these congressional members can get as much security as they want or need for their home, office and family..too bad republicants this is the price you pay/paid for your lack of moral compass + doing a deal with the devil.

the unanimous vote on his tax returns was quite telling..Trumpy got used:lol:

just like the January 6 MAGA Mob..that's why there was low attendance at CPAC..i would imagine that was FBI sniper delight to ID the Insurrectionists coming out the door.

They fear trump because of his base. They don’t want to face a primary challenge endorsed by trump so, it’s no lie. The fear is real.
so what you're telling me is that those who were sworn to protect our Constitution at any cost are happy to overthrow our government because they are AFRAID OF LOSING THEIR GRAVY TRAIN AND TO HELL WITH THE AMERICAN PEOPLE?

just wanted to make sure i had that straight and said it out loud.

BTW naming Liz Cheney yesterday made him a walking dead man- watch..folks from back east aren't familiar with western justice- they have hog farms here.
