Does mulch help hold in the smell?

I haven't experimented with much of it yet. I do add a little seabird guano to each batch of mix. I haven't used much of the other stuff yet. Just a few times. It's definitely hot. I added a tiny bit straight once and some of my pistils got burned a bit. I don't have that problem when I cook my top dress first.
So is that it runs hot, that is the issue with it?

By batch of mix, you mean your top dress mix?

I'd stay away from guano's just for your own health, especially if you use them indoors where you can inhale the dust-that stuff can contain histoplasmosis. Neem meal is a nice, functional top dress that isn't too hot or diseased. Also, a layer of straw should help with the smell, but if that's your goal, I'd push the mulch out of the way the next time I water in fish hydrolysate-then put it back and add more for good measure.

I've gotten past the smell part. My neighbors haven't mentioned it, so I'm guessing they haven't noticed. Summertime around here might be a different story though with heat and humidity. Lol....I don't believe I'll try guano. I'm seeing good results with bas gear and unless I start seeing something I don't like, I'm not switching anything up. I do want more microbial life in my soil though.
