Slice it with a very sharp knife.....they are brittle. The whole thing is hollow, stem all the way up.
I slice them vertically just before I give them the first cold water bath also.

the best line i've ever used is from "My Blue Heaven" with steve martin and rick moranis..you follow a hot chick around the store and when you get close to her in the freezer section you tell her "it's dangerous for you to be in this part of the store!" they always ask "why?"...you reply "because you're so hot, you could melt all of this stuff!"...it's worked more than once for meIf I tried that she would get it out of her purse and start putting it on me.
