Congressional Gold Medal vote for January 6 police officers overwhelmingly passes House as 21 Republicans vote no

(CNN)Five months after the January 6 insurrection, the House and Senate have come to an agreement that will award the Congressional Gold Medal to the officers who defended the Capitol.

But 21 House Republicans refused to support the legislation, the latest reminder that members of Congress still cannot agree on the facts of the deadly Capitol Hill riot.

The final vote in the House on Tuesday was 406-21. The number of House Republicans voting against the bill nearly doubled since the first time a version of the bill came to the House floor, as the vote when the bill first passed the House in March was 413-12. Republican Rep. Lance Gooden of Texas was the only GOP member to vote no in March and change his vote to yes this time around.

Both the House and the Senate had passed their own resolutions to bestow the medals, but the initial pieces of legislation varied. The revised bills will now award three medals -- one to the entire US Capitol Police force, and one to the Metropolitan Police Department, "so that the sacrifices of fallen officers and their families, and the contributions of other law enforcement agencies who answered the call of duty on January 6, 2021, can be recognized and honored in a timely manner."

A third will be put on display at the Smithsonian Institution, with a plaque that lists all the law enforcement agencies that protected and defended the Capitol.

Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia told reporters that she voted against the Congressional Gold Medal to US Capitol Police Officers and MPD because she does not believe the legislation should refer to January 6 as an insurrection.

Proud Boys leader says the far-right group is 'hemorrhaging money'

The Proud Boys and Oath Keepers are both struggling to bring in money and hold onto members, as the far-right organizations deal with the repercussions of being connected to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

The Oath Keepers launched in 2009 and the Proud Boys in 2016. The Wall Street Journal interviewed current and former leaders and members of both groups, and they described how the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers first started having financial issues after the 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. PayPal booted the Oath Keepers, founder Stewart Rhodes said, even though his group wasn't there, and he had to ask members to send their dues by mail. Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio said PayPal, Stripe, and other credit card processors — including several used by porn sites and gun makers — also banned him.

More than three dozen members and associates of the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys have been arrested in connection with the Jan. 6 Capitol attack, and prosecutors are taking a close look at any financial backing by the groups, as well as the roles played by Rhodes and Tarrio; the men did not enter the Capitol building during the riot.

Tarrio told the Journal the e-commerce site he runs to support himself and other Proud Boys has been hurt by the fact that they can't process credit card payments. "We've been bleeding money since January," he said, "like hemorrhaging money." Barely making enough to cover rent, Tarrio said he set up a secretive e-commerce site to sell merchandise with liberal slogans like "Black Lives Matter" and "Impeach 45," but wouldn't give out its name.

As for the Oath Keepers, former board members told the Journal membership has dropped 80 percent from its peak, and Rhodes said in April that the group has less than $10,000 in its bank account. Multiple board members have accused Rhodes of using Oath Keepers money to put down a deposit on a house in Montana and pay for liquor, guns, steaks, and items from the adult store Alley Katz Nighties N Naughties. Rhodes' lawyer did not dispute that he spent money on these items.

Ed Wilson managed IT for the Oath Keepers in 2015, and he told the Journal that Rhodes used the bank account "as a piggy bank." Former Oath Keepers secretary Billy Simmons said the last straw came for him in early 2020, when he learned that Rhodes maxed out his Oath Keepers card three days in a row, so he could go around his $350 daily spending limit to buy a $1,000 AR-10 rifle. Rhodes told the Journal the allegations that he misused funds are "petty, stupid, and salacious" and his accusers are "disgruntled people that have a bone to pick."

On his first full day in office, President Biden directed his national security team to lead a 100-day comprehensive review of U.S. Government efforts to address domestic terrorism, which has evolved into the most urgent terrorism threat the United States faces today. As a result of that review, the Biden Administration is releasing the first-ever National Strategy for Countering Domestic Terrorism to address this challenge to America’s national security and improve the federal government’s response.

Domestic terrorism is not a new threat in the United States, yet it is a threat Americans have endured too often in recent years. The comprehensive strategy provides a nationwide framework for the U.S. Government and partners to understand and share domestic terrorism related information; prevent domestic terrorism recruitment and mobilization to violence; disrupt and deter domestic terrorism activity; and confront long term contributors to domestic terrorism. Our approach will protect both the nation and the civil liberties of its citizens.

Under Federal law, “domestic terrorism” is defined as “activities that involve acts dangerous to human life that are a violation of the criminal laws of the United States or of any State; appear to be intended to intimidate or coerce a civilian population, to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion, or to affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination, or kidnapping; and occur primarily within the territorial jurisdiction of the United States.”
The review was rooted in an expert assessment of the domestic terrorism threat provided by the intelligence and law enforcement communities. An unclassified summary of that assessment was released in March so the public could see the key findings. It found that the two most lethal elements of today’s domestic terrorism threat are (1) racially or ethnically motivated violent extremists who advocate for the superiority of the white race and (2) anti-government or anti-authority violent extremists, such as militia violent extremists.

To develop a government-wide strategy to counter domestic terrorists, the Biden Administration consulted extensively with a wide array of experts across the U.S. Government as well as with leaders in Congress, state and local governments, academia, civil society, religious communities, and foreign governments. Throughout the process, we embraced the protection of civil rights and civil liberties as a national security imperative. The strategy we are releasing today is carefully tailored to address violence and reduce the factors that lead to violence, threaten public safety, and infringe on the free expression of ideas. It is organized around four pillars – the core elements of how the Biden Administration will improve the U.S. Government’s response to this persistent, evolving, and lethal threat to our people, our democracy, and our national security:

A U.S. Capitol rioter says he attacked a police officer during the Jan. 6 insurrection because the officer made fun of the Donald Trump supporters violently storming the building.

Newly released video shows 54-year-old Thomas Webster, a Marine Corps veteran and former New York City police officer, screaming profanities at officers and striking at least one of them with a flagpole before tackling the officer, but his defense attorneys intend to blame the victim for the attack, reported MSNBC's Scott MacFarlane.

"Showing little regard for the peaceful protesters present, Officer N.R. can be seen reaching over the metal barrier and pushing a peaceful male protester wearing a maroon sweatshirt who was blinded by pepper spray," a court filing says. "Officer N.R. can also be observed mocking several protesters who were complaining about this Officer's excessive use of force."

Webster's attorneys will make the claims in court Friday as they seek his release from jail while awaiting trial on seven federal charges, including assaulting police, unlawfully entering Capitol grounds with a dangerous weapon and engaging in physical violence.

"He's going to argue that the officer is responsible, that the officer was mocking the protesters, that the officer changed peaceful protesters into un-peaceful protesters by using chemical spray and that he was making provocative hand gestures," MacFarlane told "Morning Joe." "We look back into Thomas Webster's FBI file. He's not only a former NYPD police officer, he worked the City Hall beat during the [Rudy] Giuliani administration, from 1992 through 2011."

Trump appointee complains to judge that spreading footage of his Capitol attack is making him look bad: documents



Federico "Freddie" Guillermo Klein complained in court Wednesday that the constant spreading of videos of his attack on the U.S. Capitol is making him look bad, according to the court documents.

Klein was a former Trump State Department official and a staffer on his 2016 campaign for president. According to a Washington Post report, a State Department spokesman confirmed that Klein served as a political appointee from 2017 until his resignation in January.

"This is being investigated by FBI, and they are the appropriate agency to answer questions specific to the charges," the State Department spokesman told the Post.

Klein's lawyers filed a request with the court that became public as all public court filings are uploaded to the internet.

"Even were the Court to conclude that it is in the possession of 'video evidence' that must be produced pursuant to Judge Howell's Standing Order, Mr. Klein respectfully requests the Court exercise its discretion in rejecting this request," the court documents say. "Mr. Klein has been the subject of significant media scrutiny since his arrest and initial detention and has routinely been characterized in an unflattering manner, bordering a presumption of guilt in the court of public opinion. The release of the videos referenced by the Government will most certainly be prejudicial to Mr. Klein in the preparation of his defense as well as in ensuring that an impartial jury can ultimately weigh the evidence in this case."

But issuing the complaint, Klein's lawyers are promoting his fear of the news being spread widely. It's reminiscent of the notorious case involving singer Barbara Streisand who attempted to have Google blackout her California home so people wouldn't know where she lived. By filing the court case, she inadvertently made her own address public through the court documents. Unfortunately, Klein almost guarantees that more people will hear his story through the court filing.

The Post recalled in initial posts about Klein's "alleged conduct throughout the siege of the Capitol, tracing his apparent movements and actions from using a police shield to try to pry a door open, to calling for reinforcements from the crowd, to losing his red 'Make America Great Again' baseball cap, looking for it amid the chaos, and then grabbing another red hat on the ground that turned out to be the wrong one."
