Surfside building to be demolished as Tropical Storm Elsa approaches Florida
Florida officials said Saturday they would move ahead with a plan to demolish the rest of the collapsed Surfside, Fla., condo building within 36 hours, citing concerns about the structure being unsafe due to the impending Tropical Storm Elsa, which could make landfall within days.

The storm was downgraded from a Category 1 hurricane to a tropical storm on Saturday morning. While it is currently projected to hit the west coast of Florida along the Gulf of Mexico, officials warned Saturday that any movement east could impact ongoing search and rescue efforts in the Miami-area town of Surfside.

Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) said that the planned demolition could be done within the next 36 hours, even as dozens of residents of the Champlain Towers South building remain missing.

Surfside rescue efforts suspended ahead of demolition
Rescue efforts for bodies missing after the collapse of a residential condo building in Surfside, Fla., have been suspended amid preparations for the demolition of the rest of the building, according to local officials.

Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava (D) said earlier on Saturday that they would move ahead with demolishing the building within 36 hours amid safety concerns sparked by tropical storm Elsa, which is expected to make landfall within days.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) has issued an executive order declaring a state of emergency amid the impending storm.

Safety concerns prompt second Florida condo building to evacuate
The city of North Miami Beach on Friday mandated the immediate evacuation and closure of an apartment building following a failed inspection.

A report on the Crestview Towers Condominium found structural and electrical concerns that prompted Miami officials to take immediate action, The Miami Herald reports.

The 156-unit building, built in 1972, was the first complex to be shut down since the Surfside, Fla., condominium collapse, officials said.

In an email to NBC News, Capt. Juan Pinillos of North Miami Beach police said, "The police department is making every effort to ensure the residents in those buildings are evacuated safely efficiently."

After the Surfside Champlain Towers South collapse, which resulted in the death of at least 22 people, Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava ordered inspections of all high-rise buildings.

After the Crestview building's condo association on Friday presented the results of a January inspection that deemed the building unsafe, officials opted to act out of an "abundance of caution." The report showed the North Miami Beach building was not in compliance with the county and city's 40-year recertification process, NBC Miami reported.

A full structural assessment will be carried out to determine how to proceed with building residents, North Miami Beach City Manager Arthur H. Sorey III said, according to the Herald.

Any survivors are going to drown down there under the rubble.
