American Wildfires

I was just sent a video from a firefighter that shows my house standing! I am so happy! The fire burned everything on the other side of the two-lane street, but somehow not my house. Literally, 20 feet away is total destruction, the houses on the other side of the road are a total loss, it's weird.

Aeroknow, thank you for your perspective on all this it has helped.

It's strange though I feel guilty for feeling happy about my house right now. My town, my best friend and most of the people that I know lost everything.
I'm so happy for me and my family, but, my heart hurts for my town and my friends.
I was typing how happy I was for you when that hit me about your neighbors.

I appreciate your guys sharing the reality of this for us btw. Im out here in Michigan and have no real idea of what life is like there. I wish you all the best.

Yeah, one thing the fucking retarded “conservative” idiots around here can’t quite understand is that one of our problems stems from when they used to clear cut like mofos. But they’ll parrot some bullshit like “rake the forests” or my even favorite “ the liberals won’t let us cut down the trees!” Fucking retards. Yes. Retards! No offense to the mentally disabled. These stupid fucks live right here in Butte county. Shit loads of them. And either they have been directly screwed by the fires or know somebody close who has. It’s the liberals fault! Lets be for cutting taxes but git R done!
Fact, when they used to clear cut, different trees and shrubs took off and have dominated the area. Manzanita is one of them. Before when a forest fire came through, mostly the ground cover burned. Woopie fricken doo! So that plus it being super dry we are fucked. Can’t have anything to do with climate change!
Oh but “ it’s just a regular cycle” they now say. Fucking tards!

10 yrs before the Camp Fire. Parts of Paradise and some surrounding towns experienced the Humboldt fire. Learned allot, mainly that people needed a better way to get the fuck out. Well, that did didn’t mean shit when you have something like the Camp fire happen. A whole new level. Anyways, the part that burned down and rebuilt: something like 70%, all new homes made it. That’s really not that great. I’m pretty sure i read that it was also around 70% of all “newer” homes made it in all of P-town. Prob is there wasn’t many “newer” homes up there.

we have some strict ass building codes if you live within the Urban Wildland Interface zone. I know everyone of them believe me. Allot of them are involved with my trade. Not to mention i’m building lol.
They are still doing that shit(clearcutting), CalFire was in the process of submitting a proposal that consisted of clearcutting almost 2000 acres of forest around Chester right before all this went down.
It's a proven fact that fires travel more quickly and burn hotter through areas that have been clear cut, in large part because of the brush and small trees that grow to fill in the gap. I've never seen a company come back and manage the after-effects of clearcutting because there is no profit in it.

The federal government no longer clear cuts or recognizes clearcutting as forest management, because it isn't. So I find it incredibly frustrating that CalFire, whose purpose is supposed to be to protect us from wildfires is choosing to make profits off of our forests at the expense of public safety. Proper thinning is an important part of the solution, but clearcutting is not thining, it's not selective it is a product of greed that endangers forest communities.

And then dude, watch how much lumber they’ll chop down and drive out once the fire is out over there. It’s crazy. They still making money.

We need to monetize the removal of brush and small-diameter trees for biofuels and building materials, so that we can reduce fuels in the forests without losing diversity or the large trees which are so important for the forest ecology.
Logging the large diameter trees and letting brush takeover or removing whole sections of the forest and allowing brush and saplings to fill in is stupid, it's destroying our forests and it's endangering our communities. Management is hugely important, and unfortunately, management involves removing trees or burning. But, it's how and where we remove trees, or whether we burn intentionally during safer times of the year in strategic ways or let corporations(i.e. PG&E) burn our forests and our forest communities down to the ground.

We need to learn how to make doing the right thing for the forests and protecting the safety of the people who live here profitable because as we all know the only way to make progress happen in this country is if corporations can make a profit from it. Other countries particularly in Europe have been generating heat and energy for communities and creating ecologically sustainable building materials out of small diameter stuff for a while now and profiting from it while simultaneously protecting their forests and building ecological diversity.

It sucks whenever something like this happens Conservatives always say that it's liberal's fault for not letting them log the forests more and logging is an important tool that can be used to help, but, it's how you log and where that makes all the difference in the world. Rebalancing the wrongs that we've committed to the forests over the past 150 years is much more nuanced than most people want to accept.

90% of logging operations are done with pure profit as the primary motivation. If companies could make more profit from logging practices the facilitated forest health and fire safety then logging could be the valuable tool that conservatives would like to believe that it is.

It's sad, Collins Pine which owns a mill and a huge amount of land near where I live is considered one of the more progressive timber companies. They had huge slash piles of trees and brush piled up bigger than a two-story house in an area that the Dixie fire went through. It is illegal for them to leave them behind after logging, but it was cheaper for them to pay the fines for violating the law than to get rid of the piles, so they left them. The laws need to change so the corporations don't choose between doing the right thing and making more profits, it should cost logging companies more in fines to fuck up the environment and fuck over forest communities, but as it stands the system is set up so that they can make more money if they are willing to screw over the forest and the folks who live here.
The slash piles that they left were the small diameter stuff that I've been talking about, that other countries are making things out of.

We are so wasteful.

If nothing else we should be making mountains of soil with all that material.

And maybe then if we get enough material every year farmers could instead of clear cutting the land when we want to farm, we apply a layer of new soil ontop of the vegetation and plant into that new layer.

I still think that you guys on the west coast need to figure out desalination on a continental scale and a industry can be built up around that. Use that salty lake out there as a catch all for all the salt and plastic shit from ocean.

We need to rake the forest floors.

When that mother fucker said that, right there in my burned down hometown. Still had like 3500 missing people. I was in another town checking out all news feeds. Omg i’ve never hated anyone like him. I already hated him.

i’m all for doing multiple things to tackle problems but there is no way in hell cdf or any agency could clear out all the dead/DYING growth. No way to keep up with that and def not enough time or recourses to clear the damage done. We’re fucked.

now, doing what they’re doing now is smart. Clearing shit next to roads where dumb fucks flick their butts, drag their chain pulling a trailer etc. bout all they can do even though they are trying outside of the roads too.

Fuck yeah. Shouldn’t we make that program even bigger for the non violent offenders? Duh!

i’m all for reduced sentences. But allot of our locked up bros in that program just got released. Good/bad. Lets open up that program to more heads. Fuck welding.

good time for participating should be 75% your time. Save the 50% for the heads that just wanna rot. Gotta have a grip of time to even get considered as is. Maybe change that too?
