Lyme carrying ticks and dangerous caterpillars

Lyme and friends sucks. I know quite a few people with it and it's no joke. Not all deer ticks carry lyme, but most carry other harmful bacterias. There has been an explosion of wood/dog ticks ( what i call them) here in the northeast this summer, and as of recently, Nymph deer ticks. Thought I'd post some pics of each.

The nymphs I'm convinced infect the most people with Lyme and other nasty stuff. They are so small it's discouraging to think we can find them on us.
There is a program in Maine where you can send ticks off to a lab to get tested for free. Just freeze the tick ( you must get it free from skin whole and alive if you can)
Thankfully we steered clear of Lyme on all the ticks, but one tick tested came back as a carrier of a bacteria that made people sick similiar to lyme. We've had to put one of our little ones on antibiotics because a rash showed up. Beats the alternative.
I only have one pic of the dog/wood tick, they were everywhere this summer starting in the spring. Much bigger than deer ticks, they dont carry lyme, but can house other nasty bacterias. We never really found them sucking/biting, but they were EVERYWHERE. We just picked them off

Spraying Off or something similiar onto yourself helps and always, always do an inspection of yourself afrer being in the bush.

Next up is a nasty little catepillar new to me. Not only can it cause terrible rashes and respiratory issue, they eat cannabis. Watch out for these, I knew of a guy who inhaled the hairs and was hospitalized. Another friend got into a batch while weed wacking with a tank top on and got a massive rash on his torso. They are emerging right now out of their webs. Keep outdoor lights off as to not attract the egg laying moths at night.
I swear, nature hates us...

Yeah, apparantly even after they die those hairs can still be dangerous. I smash the carerpillars between something to avoid putting the hairs into the air.
Ya i was reading the hairs can stay active for a couple yrs. they are bad this yr along the coast.

Check out Obugzone they are a chemical free tick repellent card they make them for humans and pets and I keep one on me at all times and I’ve never had a tick on me while caring my card but without it my body is always warm so I’m a tick magnet

I still spray my pant legs & boots with deet or the permethrin. The ObugZone cards last for 3 months and they are less than 10 bucks each if you buy the family pack and I’m not affiliated with them in anyway but I still work in the woods everyday and we have so many ticks in upstate NY especially deer ticks since we have such a huge amount of deer in my area. I was just down in FL and they have tons of ticks and the whole time I had my tick card not a single tick but one evening I walked out to my truck to grab something and didn’t have my card and got a tick. I swear by the cards and the company I work for supplies me with cases of deet and Permethin

i caught Lymes disease from a tick bite in NJ back in early 2000's, had the tell tale red ring too on my skin. dont take his advise, and you risk a bad chapter in your life.
Same. Except I contracted in Connecticut in the late 90s. The treatments have since advanced but it still sucks. I'll likely deal with the RA for the rest of my life.

Hey there! Long time no speak.
Just looking at those pics gives me the heebie jeebies.:spew:
With temps rising and the winters becoming milder, Maine has seen a huge surge in ticks. We started treating the yard at home and at camp. Seresto collars for the dogs too. And thankfully, I havent seen a single tick this year. Summer aint over yet though.

Here near the coast dog ticks seem to have disappeared but still seeing deer ticks. May and June was the worst ever for dog ticks. Deer ticks will be back in October.
Today. But I'm asking it for it. I go into the woods with sandals and board shorts:eyesmoke:

permethrin sprayed on cloths is the way to go, No fucking around i worked in the woods for many yrs.
I spray myself heavily with off if im wearing pants and doing some cutting or eork in the woods. Little hesitant with that stuff on the kids.

We're going to try it. Might be great for the kids. Course we may have to gorilla tape it to em so they dont lose it lol

Hey! Grats on the new addition ! What a head of hair:hug:
Wow, no ticks at all? I guess that spray works well. I'll have to look into it for the lawns. I believe there is something i might be able to spread myself.
That's too bad about the lyme, right now we are focusing on the kids. Be a shame to start life so young handicapped with it. We do tick checks religiously every night. But i really need to pay attention to myself as well. Not something i want either.

Yeah the branches I cut and threw in the pond. I didnt mind causing a slow death with those bastards. Torch is a great idea haha.

I was bitten by a tick when I was around 8 months old. I ran a high fever for two weeks, and eventually had a seizure. This was before most people even knew about the disease.

I've considered getting some guinea fowl for tick control around the property, and probably will if ticks ever become a bigger issue here. From what I've read, guineas and possum are the two best animals for tick control.

Nope. Not one flea or tick. We used a fogger and it knocks mosquitos down too. I really hate using pesticides but it became a safety issue. We did one treatment in early May and I wouldnt do another because I try to be mindful of the bees. Our camp is really close to our blueberry fields. We dont have hives but some of the other land owners do. Plus I've got too many outdoor plants that need their beneficials. But, it does work especially if you keep on it with some garden friendly oils as well as keeping everything trimmed back.

The new baby is so much fun. And yep, he's got the native hair, lol.

We use Bens on the kids clothes. That one works really well. Mr Tang uses it when he's cutting wood. I remember my Grandpa using Old Woodsman. It smelled like pine tar or pitch.
