Are leds a lot cooler than hps?

nothing ever stays on point here, we are on a weed website...do not expect laser precision, expect many trips down dark paths, simply because we don't notice when we stray...
I was referring to this thread, the comment getogrow made, my reply to it, and what followed. Not "veering slightly off topic" in general.

Anyway, I'm not getting roped into this one.

It's impossible for energy to do two things. Any higher photon absorption by chlorophyll is less heat to the environment.

conservation of energy.
Energy converted to sugar is effectively removed from the system, being locked up in mass form.
I dont know what you mean by "two things" but i consider plant absorption and heat , two things.

I know what you are trying to say and you are right but its not enough to change temps in a room.

Imo , the light output of leds are double. 1000hps is easiely replaced with 480w qb boards. I also use bar style lights at 600w each. They put out a tad bigger spread then qb's.

Roger explained the heat in real world terms. A watt is a watt. HPS dont actually run hotter, they just have more watts and IR. This is why i question if my partner and @Star Dog are really correct when they say hps is better for winter months....

In my fucked up head , its still wasting money on electricity but im backwards as it gets.
Ex: Replace a 1k hps with a 480 Led and that leaves you 500 watts to run a heater or anything else that creates heat. Co2 generator maybe ?

Since the hps are already hanging and doing their job, i suppose it is easier an cheaper to stick with hid. :eyesmoke:
I hear what you're saying, but...
Can a 480w led really replace a 1000w hps, as in 1 kg of bud being realistically/readily achievable.. (assuming the phenos grown 1gpw with hps previously.

From what I've read I need roughly equal amount led wattage to replace hid?
Me using 650/800w of led should be OK in terms of suitable heat and humidity for led.
Atm I'm using a 300w led in my tent that's in a room measuring 19/20c and I'm toiling to maintain 25c inside the tent, if I let the temperature rise via the thermostat the humidity rises with it, atm its 24.7c/79% rh)
I need more heat/watts to keep the fan cycles frequent enough to maintain parameters alternatively I need to get the dehumidifier/heater out.

If, only if led is capable of 2gpw then using a heater to boost the temp would justifiable I think but from what I've seen 2gpw isn't a realistic target?

Yes , 2 per light is the norm for people that have already found their pheno. (thats not a huge group but plenty) My yields suck for the most part and i have already gotten 2gpw with led, once.
I have heard of 3gpw but i cant verify it , although i have seen more then 2 folks claim that. 2gpw is great so i dont know people trying to get more then that.

Anything over 600w to replace a 1k is just plain overkill....i aint met too many phenos that can even handle that much light.
Since posting I've added another 2x 240w 3k boards.

with the increase in growth I've the increase in humidity so its still difficult even with 20c at the inlet...

I'll persevere and see how it goes worst case I'll have lighting for all seasons.

LED runs exponentially cooler than HPS lighting. I just yanked 2 1000w hps lamps, ballasts, and air cooled hoods out of my flower room. I replaced them with 2 660w LED qb's because I don't want my ac running non stop from lights on to lights off every day through summer. Not to mention a $250/month savings on electric while producing the same output per harvest. The 660's certainly give off some heat but to compare it to the heat output of a 600w or 1000w hps lamp is laughable. You could replace all 4 of those 600w HID's with 450w qb's and have better yields, minimal heat, and a lower electric bill. If you're going the amazon route for your qb's I would recommend spider farmer. Mars hydro is a little skeezy. Their lights aren't trash but there are suppliers with better equipment for the same amount of money.

Hell, you could put 4 660's in there and have less heat than 4 of those 600w HPS lamps and ballasts. HID for indoor cultivation is essentially obsolete at this point in the game. 5 years from now you won't find one in a grow shop. It's just antiquated technology anymore.

I was very interested to buy mars hydro led.
I would be very appreciated if you could tell me why you think they are skeezy.
I live in Europe and need to find a good led brand in ~480w category for 4x4

As to heat I always had to deal with heat with HID lighting. As we all have or do. LED? I had to buy a small heater to be sure temperatures could be 80F or more. So in my experience far cooler and quieter and no damned gear chain of ducting and fans just for the light.

I grow in an outbuilding , factoring in costs off my 2000watt oil rads just to keep it at 18° in the winter dark period for 12 hrs would burn a hole in my pocket. I'm going to buy a great 600 watt LED though for the summer and experiment with one in a 1.2 with one plant , when air temps are more suitable . It's minus here at the min with ice. Plus the electric company has risen prices by at least 30% lately... its expensive. I'm going to get into them for summer grows .

Yep - i used to run Cool Tube / reflectors hated the intense pizza oven temps even with flow thru ducting.

Now its LED all the way.
