SpicySativa’s Outdoor Experiments

What’s up, everyone?

I figured I might as well start a grow log to document my experiments and experiences in the great outdoors (AKA my back yard).

This is my first “legitimate” outdoor garden, but I’ve got a fair amount of experience with small-scale indoor organic grows (search my name and you’ll see some grow logs, if you’re interested). I just moved back to my stomping grounds in Sonoma County, CA, and I haven’t had the time or bandwidth to get an indoor grow going. What I do have is a nice yard, good well water, and plenty of warm sunshine.

For my first experiment, I’m running a late-season garden with three Venom OG and three Purple Gas MAC clones. I started them indoors under T5 lights, hardened them off after a couple weeks of veg, then transplanted them into 15 gallon pots out in the yard. I expect they’ll start flowering right away given the dwindling daylight hours, and hopefully they’ll produce an oz or two (or more!) each. I didn’t have time for my usual ritual of mixing up soil from scratch, wetting down with compost tea, “cooking” for a couple months, etc, so I went with an old standby - FFOF with some extra worm castings.

Anyway, here are a few pictures to kick off the thread.

Cheers,
~SS

Meant to mention…

The goal of these experiments is to dial in an outdoor method that matches my personal needs and desires. I assume it will take the shape of an adaptable/adjustable greenhouse of some sort.

* QUALITY over quantity
* Small footprint and not an eye sore (10’ by 15’ or so)
* Adaptable!!! (options for easy/automatic light dep and/or supplemental lighting if I feel like it)

I’ll log this current late-season grow and share my thoughts, questions, progress, etc, on the long-term project as I go.

We have a LOT of apples… I plan to try making cider next season, but don’t have the time (or equipment) for this crop.
Yes it is time consuming. I'm just jealous because I want an apple tree but no room to plant one.

Good luck with your grow.

They’re really starting to bush up, and the first tiny hints of flowering are starting to show.

I’ll do a little more LST later today when I get off work, just to expose as many budsites as possible to direct sun.

They’re small, but they sure do look happy. :)

Another quick update… Things are moving along nicely. Got some thrips trying to get at ‘em, but alternating neem and spinosid is keeping them in check.

I’ve seen thrips in the landscaping and blackberries around the yard, so it’s no wonder that they stumbled on my cannabis garden. Hudson fogger/sprayer arrives in the mail tomorrow, then it’ll be lights out for all pests living within a 50 foot radius of my plants.

If all goes well I think I’ll pull at least an ounce or two from each of them - plenty to keep me and my fam happy for a while. :)

You’ll be happy with your end results if you allow the ripe process fully.

you did a phenomenal job starting so late!!!
Much respect bro.

Might I ad. I think your shorting yourself on the 2 oz a plant. :);)

Haha! I’m just keeping my expectations in check so I get a nice surprise at harvest time.

But yes, these little clones are giving it all they’ve got despite the late start! This size plant is pretty easy to manage - might have to do a late run next season, too!

They say an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure…. so I gathered some materials I had on hand and whipped up a rain and morning dew deflector that easily rolls up when it’s not needed. No mildew or rot for me, please…View attachment 4981295
Nice setup. I need to get cracking on something similar before we get another round of rain. I’m in Mendo. Co.

Yeah, it works OK. If I were to do it again I’d use 3/4” EMT conduit and a bender instead of the makeshift assortment of materials I had on hand. But hey, all I paid was the cost of the greenhouse tarp (which is really poor quality by the way… not impressed).
