Bacon
Lettuce
Tomato
Onion

I couldn't wait to slice up a Beefsteak tomato and make a BLTO. I've been checking on them for the last few days just waiting for them to be just perfect. The lady and I much prefer the addition of the onion. It just elevates the sandwich.

The tomatoes and onions are from the garden. I cured and smoked the bacon and baked the bread. I got distracted and over proofed the bread so it sunk a little while baking. It was still good and you couldn't tell when eating the sandwich. More cosmetic than anything.

I'll be having another for lunch today.

We've laid off the lettuce, but have had a couple of BT sandwiches lately. This year has been my best tomato crop ever. But I only picked 4-5 this morning, so I guess they are tapering off too.

I've had much better tomato crops in the past. Boxes full of tomatoes. The damn 116°F day and the others that were close to that really did a number on the flowers and many dropped. Tomatoes like warm temperatures but they don't like that kind of heat when they're flowering.

If it's not one thing it's another. Each year it's something else.

You might struggle through but if you keep at it you'll make it to the finish line with a big bag of produce.

I love growing things.

Last night when I stayed at the riverhouse, I walked down to the garden and had tomato and cuke for a late night snack.
I just sprinkled with some sea salt but tomorrow I'll put in the effort and add some olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and fresh basil to the mix. Hell, I'll probably go get some fresh mozzarella to go with it.

Now I'm thinking of making some Neapolitan pizza for dinner tomorrow. Looks like I need to get some dough started.

Change of plans. No Neapolitan pizza but I will be having some pasta.

Bean and basil pasta. Only 3 ingredients. Fresh green beans, basil, and semolina. I pureed the beans and basil and mixed that with the semolina flour. It was a tough dough to work with and I let it sit in the refrigerator overnight. I of course cooked some to try and it was delicious with just a little olive oil and garlic. I'm sure it's going to be great with the fresh tomato sauce I'll be making. Been drying for a day. I've heard you can freeze fresh pasta but I like to dry it for storage. Gotta save the freezer space for meat.

It didn't get 116 here, but it was 109 for a couple of days and it caused my tomatoes to drop all of their flowers. I have a massive # of huge green Cherokee Purple tomatoes out there and I doubt I'll get to harvest many, unless I luck out on the first frost date. I'm not going to plant any tomatoes next year. I've decided to plant a few hundred strawberry plants and sow the rest of my raised beds in salad type stuffs, that way I KNOW I can eat things out of it next year. First world/northern latitude problems.

You can always use them for fried green tomatoes.

My wife always ask me to grow Cherokee Purple. It was not a great year for mine, but I did have one plant that produced pretty well. 75% of my tomatoes so far this season were off the six pack of bought Better Boys. And they have stopped putting on new fruit in the last week or so. The young plants down at the garden are starting to bear so I should be in tomatoes for a few more weeks.

Last night's dinner was something my mother used to make us for lunch back when I was booger picking kid. Tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches. Back then it was Campbell's soup but these days it's fresh tomato soup. As much as a food snob that I am we went with the Kraft Singles for the grilled cheese. I use them when I make cheeseburgers as well. They're one of the last holdouts of processed foods I still eat occasionally for only a few things.

I used the 2.5 lb tomato I grew with some onion, garlic, and basil. All came from the garden. I also made the bread. It's not sourdough but just regular white bread.

Topped with some basil chiffonade and Italian parsley for garnish. Had I thought about it I would have sliced some cherry tomatoes in half and topped with those as well.

That was just a midday snack picked fresh from the garden. I eat other stuff that isn't so healthy. But in moderation. Overall I eat a healthy diet. I snack on things like fresh fruits and vegetables because I like them. But sometimes I go the fried fatty food route or something not too healthy.
