First post: Interesting grow box idea? Or just plain stupid

Hey guys, this is my first post and right now I am trying to figure out how i'm going to tackle my first grow box. I have a big 28"w x 57"L x 36"H chest freezer sitting here empty, so I figured I might as well try turning it into a grow box. My big question here is would I be able to have it as a grow box without cutting any holes in it and just plugging the freezer into a EL 500 cooling thermostat (it makes whatever you have it plugged into turn on at a certain temperature which you decide) and just throwing the themostat in my freezer. So it would only turn on when it's getting hot in there and cool it down without any ventilation. I am pretty sure i'd need a source of co2 and a dehumidifyer, but if I had that.. do you guys think it would work?

I think you'd need to vent out the co2 at the very least....so 1 vent mandatory.

If I were you, I'd flip it up so the long way is up...like a real fridge/closet. You can use a small HPS/MH 150-250 (depending on how good the thermostat and dehumidifier actually work)....but your going to have to vent out the co2 unless you have very small amounts being released. It'd be wise to try and get a vent in there somehow...or u gotta figure out how to have it open whilst making it light proof for flowering. That's my 2 cents.

Welcome to RIU Darome,
Your plants will need fresh air along with venting the co2 you'll be putting in, Yer gonna need at least 1 opening to get that fresh air in. Thermostats will go bad, and this senario, you'd kill your plants if it broke or went south on ya. Standing the freezer so it sits tall would be the best way to use it, but you'll definately need a hole.

Hmm I never thought about standing it upright, but that does seem like a good idea. How many plants do you figure I could sucessfully fit in a space that small though (basically 2 feet by 3 feet)? I have no problems cutting holes, I was just wondering if the idea made any sense and it seems it doesnt! haha

You could put 2 in there but they'd be cramped. 1 would be better. veg till it's 18 inches tall then flower. It will finish at the top of the freezer or pretty close to it.

Do you think this would be a good contender for a SCROG setup? I am just trying to figure out something fairly basic that will give me the best possible yeild

The size of your intended cab is ideal for a low watt setup like 150w HPS.
For other grows in similar sized cabs check out the thread in my sig, we all use 150w HPS in our cabs and the results are sweet.
You will DEF need to vent it, or eveything will be shot..Temps will go thru the roof, humidity would be off and no air movement..
You wont need to go crazy with fans unless the temps are way high, so i would suggest trying a couple of the 12v PC type fans (try to get the ones slightly larger than PC fans.(approx 3") wire them up to an old mobile phone charger...If the temps then still too high, go for 4" fans (similar to those bathroom extractor fans, and remember to mount them with some foam strip under the edge to stop vibration and reduce overall hum.

I personally think sog (not Scrog) would be perfect in there darome.
Use small square pots to maximise how many clones you can get in there.
You can also use a lil LST if they start stretching a lil too close to the light.
