Not sure what they are. But yesterday seemed fine. Today there everywhere. Little black flies. 6 plants ranging from 6-9feet. Harvest anywhere from 3-6 weeks left. I have insecticidal soap. But omg there all budding nice. I can’t imagine going leaf to leaf trying to avoid buds. Can I just mist whole plants? Do I even need to? Any advice appreciated. Upon more research, fungus gnats? I’ve got some cooler overnight lows coming up. And that soap I mention.

I'm gonna say aphids. I get gnats from time to time and gnats lay their wings flat when they're sitting still, aphids hold their wings upright like a sail.

I've not dealt with aphids personally but I get the impression they're one of the easier bugs to control...good luck!

Really? Looked at lots of aphid pics. I thought fruit fly, than fungus gnat for sure. So what do I do after diagnosis here? I have 3-6 weeks to go on all plants. And insecticidal soap. Canada so no neem. Can I mist whole plants with buds?

Only ever dealt with them outside in the veggie garden, and mostly the non-winged kind. We just spray them off with the hose. The weed garden is a bit higher stakes, but I'd still try spraying off as many as you can with water first.

After reading that article, and looking at pics im honestly more convinced there fungus gnats. Only because there all the same. Where as aphids mature and are different in colour before the black with wings. All I see is black with wings. That appeared what seemed like overnight.

All that aside….. can I use my insecticidal soap and mist the full plant with the buds anywhere from 2-6 weeks from being complete?

There are lots of Species of Aphids and they can be green, black, translucent, orange, you name it.

IME Fungus Gnats don't rest on leaves, they either in, on or near the soil or in the air.

Ok. Fair enough. I’m more concerned about what the hell to do in my situation. So aphids it is.
I’m outdoor grow. These things appeared overnight. Or so it seemed. As I’m inspecting daily. I have 6 plants. Range 6-9 feet. Harvest ranges from 2-6 weeks.
Do I need to painstakingly attempt to spray each individual leaf with my insecticidal soap? Can I list the full plants when covered in bud?
Do I do anything at all? Will they die with 3-4C overnight lows?
Thanks for any help!

At this point I'd still go with the article's recommendation of spraying with plain water first, when it's sunny out so it evaporates quickly. If they're persistent then go for something more serious.

Aphids only grow wings when they need to look for a new food source, so if you're only seeing flyers then they probably just got there, which is good. I'd check for wingless ones on the undersides of leaves too just to be safe.

Out side pots? Wouldn't freak out if its gnats.Let soil dry back more this will kill the larva in the top 1/2" of soil.

Awesome thank you. Good news that they might be moving on than. And a really nice 24C day today. I just worry about rain everyday now but if a spray today I’d predict it evaporate quickly. I’ll be out there giving some dry nutes, and watering wells anyway. So I’ll spray em down good. Thanks.

Look great, next yr spray the soap a couple of times before flower, this will insure aphids stay off.You cant really do anything now.Check with a loupe or scope and see what they are.
Thanks. Yes. I’ll definitely treat early. I posted the pics at start of thread. Get a pretty good pic from them. But they look like either. Black with wings aphid. Or a fungus gnat. Lol. To this inexperienced eye anyway. I can definitely take the mist on the garden hose to them soon. It’s sunny and 24C today. Should be a worry to add to bud rot I hope. We have rain this week coming anyway with way less cooler temps.

Those dont look anything like the aphids common to my area. Not saying they arent though.

If they are, Nuke em will help. It's citric acid so not that nasty of a product. Also helps with pm. A member just posted his homemade recipe of 2-3 tsp ( powdered citric acid) per quart of h20.
Too much Nuke em will burn leaves fyi.

I’m quite sure after just looking zoomed in it’s got to be an aphid. Black winged aphid I typed in and it’s so similar. The gnats look more like mosquitos. So I think going back a few posts a water spray, with today being hot and sunny not a bad idea as now that there all winged there ready to move on. Damage probably done.
