It's an older book but it's a great place to start: Marijuana Botany by Robert Connell Clarke. He also wrote a wonderful book on hashish. You're also going to want to perfect your growing game before you even start. Learn to identify true quality plants, male and female, and learn to harvest at full maturity. At that point, you can try some "pollen chucking." Look up the "pollen chuckers unite" thread here and see what other people are doing. Once you have all the basics down, you can come up with a plan to breed your own strain. Figure out what you like in a strain and think about how you can get there. I highly suggest working from the landraces while they are still around.
