HLG 350R - does this sound too hot?

New light- just went into Veg and turned up lights and it's getting pretty hot. The top part of the light is pretty warm. I called HLG and they said to raise my light and that it's normal for it to get pretty warm but this seems like too much.

Here are the basics
- Tent- 3 by 3 that's 6 feet tall
-4 inch inline fan AC Infinity- it is mounted to top of tent and exhausting out the top
-I have a humidifier in the tent

The temperature has been reaching 88 degrees even with the fan turned all the way up. One other issue is that because the fan needs to be so high the humidifier is pumping out a lot and it's getting blown into my room. I want to avoid a mold issue so I put a dehumidifier in the room where the tent is and that is raising the room temperature. I am going to get a smaller dehumidifier that doesn't get so warm.

Is this normal for an HLG 350r???

Thanks for any input!

Mine puts out a ton of light on 100%, do you need that much for veg? I have one I run 100% (6th week of flower 12/12) in a 4' x 6' x 8' closet with decent ventilation, room rarely goes over 80F except on hot days. Your tent is pretty small compared to my closet. Maybe crank up ventilation and turn down the light. Lose the dehumi unless you really need it. I'm new to the light myself.

The 4 inch AC Infinity is the $25ish one, right? I have that on a 2x2 and it's really weak on max-it's fine for my 100 watt led at 80%. The 6" puts out 10 times as much air, or more. I think it's a ventilation issue.

Under HLG 600 I'm having my best results with ambient temps between 87-90, with a leaf temp up to 84 and an RH 45-50. I am growing in soil both open and 4x4 tents with drivers remote mounted off of the heatsink and outside the tents. These numbers are working for me in veg and flower. Hope this helps, if not discard. TC I sure would like to try a 350r in a 4x4.

First of all ditch the humidifier and put the dehumidifier outside your grow room with the exhaust i.e. hot air pointing away from your grow room.

Second what is 88 degrees and when are you taking your readings?

Third you need to be more concerned with keeping the leaf temperature between 81-83f. When you do this your tent temp should run around 84-88f at least mine does. I run about 325 watts in my Gorilla 3x3 and yes its on full blast from day 1.

Fourth I run 2 Honeywell HT-900 Turbo Force fans on the floor and 2 4 inch Hurricane fans on the top blowing over the canopy. This should keep your mold at bay. :hump:

I run small fans blowing air across all my lights, and another blowing across all my remote mounted drivers. Not required, but will add longevity to your electronics.

Wow that's a lot of ventilation! The temperature of 88 degrees was taken on top of the soil (just using a combo humidity and temperature digital meter)

I am using the humidifier in the tent because I live in a pretty dry climate and my understanding is that during seedling and Veg stage higher humidity is good

I am running the dehumidifier in the room the tent is in because I don't want the ambient room humidity to get too high because I am very sensitive to mold and live in an energy efficient house which means its pretty sealed up.

Question about those Honeywell fans on the floor- I am growing in 2 earth boxes which are 11 inches high. If I were to put some fans on the floor should I put them on something?

I will get a thermometer that can measure the leaf temp- thanks for the tip.

You likely don't need all 350w in veg. Dump the dehumidifier as mentioned unless your RH > 70% or so. 82-85f is fine under LEDs
Got it. My concern was that when it's flowering I am going to want to turn the light up all the way- I want to get ahead of the temp control in advance. I did turn it down for now

Thanks this is helpful. For some reason I thought that during flower the temp needed to be a little lower. I am growing in living soil in Earthboxes

No not ventilation but rather circulation. The more air you have circulating around your ladies the less chance you have of catching PM or Bud Rot hence the reason I am telling you to remove the humidifier from your tent. If your ladies require more humidity the put a clear solo cup on top of them creating what is called a humidity dome.

. You say you live in a energy efficient home which means you should have central air and that in it self will keep your ambient humidity in check.

No you don't have to put anything under the Honeywell's they are on the floor to move air through the underneath of your canopy and the 4 inch clip on Hurricane fans on top are for moving air around the top of your canopy. This will help you greatly in controlling mold. bongsmilie

Here's a cheap and simple way to check leaf temp :peace:

Wow, thanks so much for taking the time to share your knowledge. As for the humidifier- the reason I am using it is based on what I learned about VPD from the Buildasoil 10by10 videos. He is growing in a climate very similar to mine and he uses a pretty burly humidifier. Without the humidifier my humidity is pretty low (I would have to shut off the humidifier to check exactly what it is. My understanding was that there are different VPD ranges for different phases of the plants life- and humidity is one of the ways of modulating VPD.

As for the energy efficient home- you are right that it has A/C; however, I keep the door closed and the central thermostat is in another room.

OK that makes sense about the circulation and I will implement this.

Thanks for the tip on the thermometer- will order

I am still not clear about something- is it normal for these kind of LEDs to be so warm? I want to make sure I don't have a defective light.

Thanks again!

I like this chart for VPD @Dank_Medicina; maybe you‘ll like it too.

Well here is an honest opinion. I took 2 320W 301h fixtures into my greenhouse as temps lowered and clouds prevailed.

My observations that the 320 301h's cranked to 350W still were pathetic and severely lacking to diffused morning sunlight. A thought.

Thanks. OK I turned off humidifier and waited 24 hours- here are my measurements with the light at about 50%. The leaf temperature is 77 degrees, the ambient temperature in the lower part of the tent is 84 degrees. The temperature on the top of the light is 142

Given that- do you still think the humidifier is a bad idea?

Thanks!

I put your leaf temp of 77 and room temp of 84 in to the VPD chart and it likes between 60 and 70 RH. You said it’s 45-50 didn’t you?
The leaf temp seems low compared to the ambient air, which is kinda warm.
What’s the temp of the air and leaves at the canopy?
I understand where you’re going with this, it’s not going to be easy to keep temps good under full wattage. I’m getting fox tailing now myself with canopy temps at 86-88. I dropped the a/c down 2 degrees to 84 I think.
You might be able to lose the humidifier in flower, the plants would like RH in the 50’s then.
Cool the tent more. Turn up the a/c in the room or provide more airflow out of the tent, or do both.

sorry I wasn't clear- the light is set at 50% of it's capacity, the RH is 22% without humidifier. The temperature at the canopy is 82 right now (I just turned up the exhaust a bit)

I just got off the phone with HLG and he said my unit is running a bit hotter than it should. As such, I need to see about switching it out- which may be a little tricky mid run. I am going to put in the fans in the bottom of the tent as you suggested this weekend. For now, I am going to keep the light at 50% capacity. The other thing is it's cooling off where I live so I can open the window a bit to cool off the room. I did turn the humidifier back on.

I am in week 2 of veg

Thanks again!
