I have never aerated mine, but yes, gnats mostly.Were you seeing gnats? That's been the only problem I've had which had been solved using my own compost. I'm fortunate that the hypoaspis miles love it and take care of any FG larvae. My current run i used bagged compost and as usual it had FG. I knew this might be a problem so I screened in some of my own compost, maybe half gallon or so when i mixed it all up. I had some flyers after about 7-10 days but those have disappeared and the miles are crawling out my EB drain holes looking for food.
I also aerate my res.
Once i had these tiny white worms crawling out the drain and up the sides, larvae of some sort.
