Deciding if mother has dominant or recessive traits.

So I read all through the breeding collective information pinned thread and I’m just trying to understand this better. So from my understanding if you want to start a breeding line with a mother that you like and want to pass those traits on. You want to know if the traits you want to pass on are dominant or recessive.

I have an example from seeds I just ran and I am wondering if this is a good way to make an educated guess as to if the trait is recessive or not.

So I just ran 7 plants and the pheno I kept was purple it was the only 1 of 7 that was really purple. There were 2 others that had tiny flakes of purple and some purple leaves and the other 4 had no purple. So is it safe to assume the purple is recessive since only one of 7 was really purple? Am I thinking about this right or is the sample size to small to really know.

I saw this ? this morning and wanted to take a crack at it to see if i even understand if im wrong lol.
How do you know if you carry a recessive gene?
1634746916717.png
Recessive alleles only show their effect if the individual has two copies of the allele
so the 1 out of the 7 thats got the purp u want might have the double allele (likely) cuz of mother father F1's passing 50%.
Is that a good mother? Idk still dippin my feet in that, i think you want to take that 1:7 purp and self it, then all those S1 beans will have that purp, and work that line to stabilize. Find a father you want, yada yada. hopefully more advanced cats will correct any error on my part

Pheno hunting is good fun, going to start one soon, done it count less times before, you grow out a pack of seeds, take cuttings from each plant and label them so you know which plant you took the cuttings from.
once you harvest the plants, you take the weight, size, flower time of each plant and give it a score out of 10.
next you smoke some bud off each plant(2-3 hours apart) give it a score out of 10.
then sit down and look at the score for each plant and decide which plant you want to keep.

With one amazing phenotype, you should get amazing results every time.
I grow in soil as its cheap(even cheaper making your own soil mix) and the timing is perfect for a veg and flower room.
2/3 weeks to root cuttings, 5-6 weeks veg while you flower off your plants, you can keep this cycle going for years.

some plants are triploid I read...I don't know how that would work lol or if it's true. It makes my head hurt.

I think if you breed something and every time like with subcools space dude it makes the potency go up and the taste change to be more like space queen...that's probably a dominant trait...

oh you said the mother well maybe like the reverse lol...

I have a perpetual with a gg4. 1 mother typically. 4 clones in flower. 4 starting flip. 4 vegging and 4 starting. 3 gal pots.1 2x4..1 3x3..1 4x8. Screwed my cycle this round trying different training styles. Gottem big in 20gal but bah. I like the many small over the bigguns myself.

Your plants look great but thing's get messy when you grow different size plants in different pots under different lights

Yep. Tried some different styles in different pot sizes. 2 20 gal and 1 10g.After those girls come down back to 8 plants in 3gal. Screwed my system up but have the time and resources to fart around. The scrog and trainwreck i dislike. I prefer to be able to get in and givem personal love. The 8 little plants you see are just being flipped others will harvest right on time to open tent back up. Was a fun experiment and i learned a lot about my grow tastes. All clones so as long as i keep mother happy in her tent ill just keep playing around.

never had a mother plant but always used clones(taken just before flower my plants off)

Man having the mother has saved me. Lost a whole batch of clones once. Had to pull from a plant fully in flower. Took forever to reveg. NEVER again...lol. i keep a mother in a 3x3 in a 20gal. This is last mother i flipped after new one took well.
That's a good point but if you take cutting a week before flowering them off and you don't have any luck by the 2 week in flower, you can take another set of cuttings, used to take my cutting 2 weeks in flower, less root but if you take a few more cutting, you should be ok.

Never had all the cutting die on me, on a really bad batch of cutting I have lost half of them(5 out of the 10 cuttings)

Was on vacation. Lost the whole tent. Power outage and that tent did not cut back on. Others did thank goodness.

I visited Cornell’s cbd/hemp field day this past summer and they had rows of triploids alongside rows of males testing to see how sterile they truly are. I’ll have to wait until next summer to find out their results. Unless they posted it somewhere. Was very neat to see and hear what they are working on!
They had some other neat experiments as well involving pm and the use of different fungicides and if they impacted cannabinoids. Very neat.
