Hash making questions (dry sift)

Hi all,

I'm in the midst of harvesting right now and I'm going to make dry sift hash with all of my little airy popcorn buds. Do I dry these buds as normal and skip the cure process as they won't be smoked and smoothness isn't a concern? Or is curing/non curing noticeable with hash?

Also I heard it works well to freeze the material for a day before sifting as it's supposed to help the trichomes fall off easier. Correct?

Is silk screen the ideal choice when sifting? Or is there something better anyone can suggest?

First time making hash, any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated!

It may not be how other's do it but I hang my plants to dry after I do the wet trim. After drying, I trim the buds from limbs over a tray that has a 150 micron screen in the bottom of it and it nests in a second tray that collects all the trichomes. The larger buds go into my jars for curing and all the "popcorn" stays in the tray and gets sifted. What's left in the top tray goes into a bag and into the freezer for 24 hours then is sifted for a second time. I sift by moving the tray back and fourth for a minute or so. Usually I get 50-75% more when sifted cold. Then it goes back in the freezer until I get enough to make a bubble hash run. I then use a parchment paper and bottle of hot water method to finish the hash.

I hang them until dry then I use dry ice and bubble bags over a 5 gal pail. I tried 73 and 220 micron. Both worked well. Next time I will try 120 and then end with 220

First bag in the 5 gallon pail is 25 micron then the next size inside that and so on till last bag at 220. Then place leaves etc. in the top bag. add ice and water, stir then slowly lift out first bag and place it in a sink. Then lift the second bag and remove the wet hash and place it on a foil sheet. This will be the biggest of the trichomes. Then continue with each bag until last bag comes out. Now you should have 1 bag with working material in it and 3 empty bags. Repeat the process again until you are not getting anything left in the bags but do it at least twice. Now you should have 3 piles of wet trichomes on your foil. With the bag kit comes a 25 micron sheet about 10" by 10". Place that sheet on top of 1 of the piles and with a paper towel in your had press down on the pile. What should happen is the trichomes will stay on the foil and the water will penetrate thru the sheet and into the paper towel. Now you just need to cure the hash.

That is the process that I used the first time I did it. But since then I figured a different way to do the same thing. I would use two 5 gallon pails. One to place the bags as described above and a second one to do the mixing of the ice and cold water. Then pour the mixture from the mixing pail into the 2nd pail.

You gotta ditch that ice and water method and try dry ice. I lost so much kief doing it that way. I used to get like 3 grams at the end with the water and ice but with the dry ice I now get upwards towards 20 with the same amount of leaf material. You lose so much and you can tell because the water always had a sticky feel to it. Now with dry ice all that sticky is on the table in front of you

I cure mine to retain more of the terpenes. I use stainless cloth for the first sieve and silk screen for refinement.

Dude thank you for this great reply! I'm a little late getting back on here. I spent some time looking into bubble hash and have ordered the 8 pack of all mesh bags from Bubble Bag Dude on amazon. Sounds like the all mesh drain a lot faster. I don't think I will use all 8 bags but it was the only option for the all mesh version. I thought about using two 5 gallon buckets as well because everyone says be careful when mixing not to tear the bag. I wondered why others haven't used two buckets to avoid this. I am also considering using a mixing tool on the end of a drill, like for mixing drywall compound. Nothing too crazy, just medium speed or so. Would definitely mix things up more than by hand.

Also very smart tip about the paper towel behind the pressing screen!

How do you cure the hash?

I used to get like 3 grams at the end with the water and ice but with the dry ice I now get upwards towards 20 with the same amount of leaf material. You lose so much and you can tell because the water always had a sticky feel to it. Now with dry ice all that sticky is on the table in front of you

I will look into this! Also need to figure out where to get dry ice in my town. Where do you get yours?

A couple days ago there was a whole thread on here if you look about making hash with dry ice. With the water and ice method you get only a couple grams that you have to dry but with dry ice man you get a ton of dry kief ready to smoke or press. I always noticed with water and ice which I used for years that the water was still sticky feeling even after the straining. That’s because you are losing a ton of trichomes or parts of trichomes and you just pour it on your lawn. Look up YouTube videos there are a bunch. As for dry ice you just have to call around to different stores and don’t just take no as an answer. If they don’t have it ask where they would suggest you looking. Sooner or later you will find a place

Check out the thread called ^Dry Ice vs. Bubble (Hash)^. I never tried or make dry ice sift. I make bubble using two buckets like you suggested, one for mixing and the other collects. I only used a drill once and on the lowest setting it breaks up too much plant matter. So instead of some nice blonde looking hash it's gonna be green and taste like shit. I use a wooden spoon and take it easy. Usually do 3 runs max. I personally think quality is better than quantity. For curing I collect each pile from the 4 bubble bags I use (73micron usually being the best flavor) and put it on a 25 micron screen that sits on top of a small towel. There are different ways of doing the next part but all I do is fold over micron screen so hash is sandwiched in between it and towel and squish to squeeze some water out of the hash. Put on a ceramic plate and break it up into little pieces the size of Nerds candy. Let it dry in dark and dry zone. Once dry it's ready to do what you want with it. A pollen press will allow you to make little hash pucks. Two runs look like this with 1 ounce of dry frozen trim used. I got 7.3 grams.

Thanks fellas, the bags arrived this week and was hoping to get to it this weekend but will have to be next weekend. I'll post some pics of what I get out of it, probably have over 1/4 pound of pretty nice popcorn buds. I will try both methods if I can get my hands on some dry ice.

So I spent Saturday afternoon processing my scrap using the method I described above except I used two pails for mixing. I decided 1/2 way thru to try the dry ice method so I held back 1/2 the stock. I ended up with 16 grams of blond hash that is now on a dish in the fridge aging until I know what I want to do with it. The reason for the wanting to try the dry ice method is do to seeing the water as I dumped it between loads. I did the first run and reused the same water with added ice for the next run. While I was pouring the stirred mix into the pail with the bags it occurred to me that using two pails may not be the best way to do this. The reason being that if you mix in the bags the trichomes will fall l to the bottom and into the bags. But if you use a different pail they fall to the bottom but when you pour it into the pail with the bags they will be on the top. So now you have to stir it again or rinse it off. So that is how I ended up having to dump some of the water as mentioned above. In doing that I noticed the colour of the water and it seemed to me to be different that expected although I do not know what to expect to tell the truth. I looked on line and found 3 places that sell dry ice in Toronto at $25 for 5 lbs. I know I do not need 5 lbs. but that is the smallest they sell.

Hi Cunack3, Yes do cure the trim at least 4 weeks at 58% to 62% humidity. Dry sift at 62%-65% humidity for less veg bleed through, frozen in the freezer between grabbing handfulls for #110 Mesh (190um), then #90 Mesh (149um), working it with an old credit card. If you buy a press mold, get a 2" x 2" and NOT 2" x 4", per one crops trim cannot fill a 2" x 4". One crop's trimmings can completely fill a 2x2 mold. Vice squeeze it, warm it up to Body Temperature while it is being squeezed. No hotter!

i put my mold pieces in a baggy and put them in a bowl of hot water for about 10 minutes, till they're just slightly too hot to hold, they cool down as i'm getting stuff ready, and by the time i use them, they're probably 120ish, kind of between warm and hot
