4x4 OD flood tray plant count

I am between grows for the winter and I'm trying to figure out how to optimize my grow. My signature has all the info from my first (and only) grow.

Using the same style (rockwool ebb and flow) with a 6 week veg, I am curious how many plants I could do in my flood tray either with or without topping.

I feel like I could do 16 non topped plants, maybe 6 or 8 plants topped 3 times, but I'm curious what input yall have since you were good to me my first grow.

Thanks in advance - TB

I dug into your posts to find your first/last grow.. Good finish, would have liked to have seen the grow itself... You had space for at least 3 more plants in your first grow... Youve done so well first time, why not just increase the number of plants until you're satisfied? You already know that's what your gonna do, don't you? Any answers you get to these questions are just going to be guesses.

When you say "see the grow itself" what do you mean?

I used a 45 gallon res and usually topped it off about every 3 days when it starts to get down a few gallons. I went out of town for 9 days one time though and they were totally fine. Usually I would clean my res and do a full change out every 2-3 weeks.
I remember you. We did similar style back in the day. Still have my tables.

To the OP: SOG is the best style for flood and drain in my opinion. Way less veg time and no need for topping and training. Just trim off side branches to make single cola plants which can be packed in close together in 4 inch or 6 inch square pots. I always use hydroton or grow rocks rather than rockwool but It's the least important part of the equation. Rocks and hydroton can be reused infinitely which I prefer to having to purchase rockwool blocks for every run. My last run in hydro I tried SCROG and it was extra work and time and a disappointing yield. I always did better with more plants. Others, of course, may have strong opinions in the other direction. SCROG became popular to maximize yield while obeying ridiculous legal plant limits. Where I am the legal plant limit is zero so it isn't a consideration.

Fascinating. Quick story time...

When I was a teenager I started working with a local cultivator. He took an entire 3 story apartment building and rigged it into a grow. The ro water was in a huge plastic pool on the third floor that was connected to the flower room (s2) with a hose, through a wall and down. There were between 12 and 16 pods, running a perpetual SOG set up. I want to say the trays were 4x3, and in retrospect the only limitation for how many plants plants their were per pod was probably the size of the rez for each pod. Flushing every cube and filling each (roughly) 16 gallon res was enough to empty the pool on the third floor, hence why he wouldn't run a more packed set up...

My mentor was a good dude, but we had a falling out about 6 years ago... He had a mid life crisis. Started hanging with a bad crowd, doing harder drugs, and he ended up dying in a motorcycle accident last year. Thats what inspired me to grow again, with a modified version of what he taught me. I still remember how a room full of HPS lights would change an orange lighter to a yellow lighter as my eyes adjusted to the spectrum, but some of the finer details of what I was taught were lost in the years since. Thats why I come here.

Anyways, I'm rambling. Thank you for your time. - TB

I am happy to help. Could tell you weren't completely in the dark. I took a look at the final pic in your last grow. Very nice indeed. And, yeah, I tend to run on when I post...

When you say "see the grow itself" what do you mean? It means I went looking for the grow thread and found nothing.. There are some really good pics of the begining flower and the finish.. I guess I expected to find more than you offered.
I think it's maybe expectations that pave the road to hell, not good intentions...

Your method and yield have followers waiting in the wings. They'll want to know how you handle the plants from start to finish.. I've read a lot of threads, and the few using only rockwool aren't near as successful as you. Myself, I have no love for rockwool and have sworn fealty to rdwc... This is a wayback thread of mine.. Wow, that was thurough... challenge accepted. I'll be back in action come spring with a grow journal. Thanks for the kind words, stranger. -TB

I will concur. You have a lot to give to the community if you feel like putting in that energy. Grow journals here don't get the traffic they used to but I would follow your grow like going to church to hear the old enternal truths. Welcome to RIU.
