My understanding is that cal mag supplementation is more of a hydro/soilless medium thing.

Does soil even need cal mag added, live ever?

Iv never had to use it. This guys posts are contradicting itself. He even said just plain water is killing them. So I’m confused.

So I’m came to the assumption that my soil “purple cow living soil” is to powerful and is burning my plants. What should I do about this ? Here are some pics and please no one tell me it’s over watering because it’s not I have solved every other problem the only other possible option I believe is a cal mag def but I’ve been adding cal mag every watering now and still the issue worsenes! And it’s not root bound on the small clones because it’s happening to my big plant too! This soil is brand new ! So I’m super confused. Thought it was a K def but I’ve heard and read that a K def only happens in flower. What shall I do! All the same strain “OG Kush”

If the soil is too hot I'd transplant into something better. No reason to fight the medium when it can just be something different. If it is the the soil truly is not suited you should change it, not add supplemental nutrients. A balanced soil will allow for appropriate nutrient uptake, with that happening you shouldn't need to supplement your micro nutrients because they should be naturally absorbed.
I personally have never been impressed with anything straight from the bag.

After thinking about it and looking back at your pictures, I'm going to assume that the smaller plants in the cups are clones taken from your bigger plant. If that's true, the clones look the saddest. In my experience if the soil is on the hotter end, nutrient rich, clones don't like this in early stages. Cups not draining well may also compound this issue.

After thinking about it and looking back at your pictures, I'm going to assume that the smaller plants in the cups are clones taken from your bigger plant. If that's true, the clones look the saddest. In my experience if the soil is on the hotter end, nutrient rich, clones don't like this in early stages. Cups not draining well may also compound this issue.

I’ve thought that but I’ve heard and read you cant have a K def till flower. And before the cal mag the plants were looking very wilted and leaves were curling more. Cal mag most definitely made them look more presentable 100%

Excess calcium will lock out potassium, the plant uses them interchangeably in building cells potassium is just better to be uptaken during flower for a myriad of reasons.

Depending on how much cal mag you added you might be seeing k lockout and not k deficiency because most living soil blends have loads of calcium in them already, and that's what they're getting at.


Fwiw I've definitely nuked my plants in a similar way but in reverse basically, excess potassium locking out a bunch of other stuff in a roundabout way. Look up mulders chart and you'll get an idea of why adding things before solving problems can be a nightmare, you're just going to end up chasing your tail.

First stop buying overpriced “ super soil “ … that is basically like running ocean forest.

Yellow margins are from potassium deficiency …
From your EXCESS CALCIUM USE. Calcium excess will cause antagonist results with potassium as does over use of nitrogen.

It a water only mix … meaning add TAP.
Fox farm ocean forest is the same way … nute dense add water only.

Adding more K will help balance it out. It’s 100% from adding too much calcium and magnesium
