CBD?

Question, is there any way to tell whether or not you are growing cbd, or regular cannabis? Short of sending a sample in for testing? Curious as hell. I had some seed that made killer butter, but smoking was, meh.
Please educate me.

Cbd is regular cannabis, it's just a different cannabinoid,
Check out the strain you're growing, most companies will give an estimate of cbd % and thc %,

If it's making killer budder as in you get really high off the budder then it's not because of any CBD. You can test for the presence of CBD using the Beam's test. Gonna need some everclear and some potassium hydroxide but the procedure is easy enough. If CBD is present the sample will turn reddish. Darker red means higher CBD levels when all samples are treated the same. Doesn't tell you the exact level but just that it's there.

5 decarbed pot samples. #I was a regular THC type sample and showed no CBD. #V was from a mother plant that was supposed to be all CBD and very high but proved to be compost at the end. The middle ones were 3 strains of CBD pot with #IV showing the highest levels.

A buddy actually sent me a 1lb bag of it a few years ago. I never could find any on Amazon . ca but hobby places that sell soap making supplies should have it as it makes a softer soap than NaOH aka caustic soda aka lye.

Before I got the pure stuff I evaporated some pH Up in a measuring cup on the stove. Some wire screen on the element under the cup. If you have some of that check the label as most are a 10% sol'n of KOH and just water. 5g will make 100ml of reagent and you only need 4 or 5 drops for each test. For a while tehy were selling 200ml bottles of Everclear for $12 here but haven't seen those for a while. Just the 750ml bottles for about $35 each. Ronsonol lighter fluid can be used for the solvent to extract your decarbed sample.

Cheap way to find out if the CBD pot you're growing really has CBD in it.

I have Everclear, so that’s a win!


I was thinking of getting an autoclave for doing infusion without terpene loss. What are your thoughts on this? Is it just better to use instant pot or slow cooker? Not sure how long to Decarb cbd and at what temp?

I've never heard of an autoclave for things like decarb. That thing looks like a hash press and only holds 100ml so tiny batches for me. Uo should get a variac for less money and be able to use it for all sorts of things. I use one of those tiny crockpots for up to 500ml batches or a full size one up to 2L.
I heat up the carrier oil in the crockpot then toss in fresh frozen or dry buds and let them cook for a while until soft then hit them with a hand blender to grind them up. Once cooked enough and any water boiled off raise temp to 250F and once the tiny decarb bubbles stop turn off the heat and add some liquid sunflower lecithin once below 212F/100C and strain once cool enough to handle easily. Leave it somewhere warm for 24 hours so the fines settle out then decant carefully into smaller containers so you don't even need to filter it. All the fines stay on the bottom of the larger container.

Look at the wattage when shopping for these. A 500W won't work with a 1000W hotplate and a 1000W one will heat up a lot pushing that hot plate. The one I posted is 2000W and not a lot more than a 500W one. More is better in this case.

The variac looks handy, I also have a small crock pot, I think it’s about 2-3 litres. I like your method of looking for the bubbles to stop, it’s visible and definitive as to when to stop the process. Is there any difference in effects from your oil to your smoked/ vaped ?

For sure. When you smoke it you are getting Delta9 THC but when eaten your liver converts it to Delta 11 so even if you have a huge tolerance to smoking you'll get wasted on just a tiny bit of edibles when you begin so start low and work up. Can take 2 hours to feel the THC buzz and you won't get a buzz from all CBD so have to pay attention to how your body feels using it. A mixed edible dose is a lot like being a bit tipsy on booze depending on how much THC is in it. Greening out from an edible OD sucks but a couple oz of hard booze knocks it back quick.

I like your setup!! Double functioning devices are always a win. I agree the cbd is going to be way more subtle so it’s going to be a bit more difficult to assess. Thanks for the explanation, much appreciated and I learned something new.
