I mean you're not wrong but also I wouldn't call something flowering under 18/6 a "normal" photoperiod.
If it flowers under 18/6 then it would have flowered under 20/4 or 24/0.
I'm under the assumption that they are people who lost patience. Every auto I've grown over 6 years has flowered on it's own without changing light schedules. Some took up to 8 weeks.
I think you're missing the point. But there are plenty of people out there that complain their auto won't flower under 24/0. I have no personal experience with this but I have seen people complain about it.

I've just seen some claim it's due to "unstable" genetics from breeders crossing ruderalis with sativa/indica/random hybrid. Which is what I'm referring to, but I guess you're not missing my point.

True. I guess really it's a matter of what you can plan for when you get down to it. If you're wanting to harvest pounds of dried bud you probably don't want to bank on a single auto, regardless of advertising.
The 8 week veg plants were grown at an average temp of 66F. Just slows everything down.
People will blame anything but themselves. ALL autos are a cross of ruderalis. That's why they autoflower.

Unruly would be a very accurate description. Bud started to foxtail at the end due to me turning up the wattage too high, oops.
