Thanks for all of this very useful info and opinions folks. I just purchased my first proper led light to replace a 600w hps.
I went with a mid range option, the spyderfarmer se5000. Its a 480w bar style led. https://www.spiderfarmer.com.au/products/spider-farmer-se5000-led-grow-light
The only reason I didnt go with the Migro light was because being somewhat broke I needed to pay it off with an afterpay style thing which they dont offer.
Star dog when I said heat was no issue I just mean that I have my temps well under control with the HPS currently and its not a huge factor in my decision to go with led like it is for some people. Im using a closed system with a vivosun vented hood that ducts straight to the outside and the hood stays very cool. THen AC to keep the temps optimal. Where I live external temps rarely go below 15 deg c in winter so heating isnt required.

Do report back with results after a round or two with the led vs hps.

If heat or wattage is no concern, IMO the remaining differences between HID and LED is light spread, spectrum, and maintenance (bulbs). The latest LED's can have improved light spread instead of concentrated in center. Also, LED's dont require bulb changes and many now offer full spectrum.

You can get a 300w led for $200+- but if you’re trying to light a 4x4, a 5x5 or a whole room cheap (and can afford the running costs) you can get 1000w hids with bulbs in air cooled hoods for <$200

It is absolutely true what you say.

I don't understand people anyway who are trying to grow "about a pound" and apparently don't even have enough money for a decent light.

If you have to start that small, you can always get a 100W LED for maybe $80 and finance a bigger setup with your first harvest. At least that's my thinking.

And now you have LEDs with maybe twice the system efficiency compared to HID. That's just so much electrical power saved (and therefore CO2 emission reduced).

I once lit a joint with a 600w HPS.

I used to grow under 2x600w HPS. Then I stopped growing for a few years. I came back to growing in April 2020 when the Pandemic meant I couldn't get any weed. So I pulled out my old HPS lights and they wouldn't work. So I bought some cheap COB LEDs on Amazon. They worked but the weed was always a bit light and fluffy. I couldn't get the results I used to get under HPS, but I wasn't chasing my arse trying to keep everything cool either.

My mate is a grower and a bit of an electronics guru too. He showed me some lights he had built using bits he bought on AliExpress. Samsung LM301H boards and Meanwell drivers. Basically he had built a clone of a Mars Hydro TS1000, at a fraction of the price. So I had him build me 4 of them.

So I am now running 4x150w in a 4x4 and the results are impressive. Yes I have to run a little 80w greenhouse heater 24/7, but that actually makes little difference to the cost. I will never go back to HPS.

The only niggle I have had is getting the temps and ventilation right. If I use my big RVK fans the temp drops too much. So I have some extra desk fans to keep the air moving and a small tube heater, it works. As it gets warmer I am going to invest in a modern AC Infinity fan and control it with some Zigbee temp/humidity sensors and some smart switches.

I am not one for taking pics of my grow, the first time I have ever posted a pic online, I took it a couple of weeks ago . It doesn't give you much sense of scale, but the colas are now tight as can be and the frost/resin production is awesome. Not the most impressive grow ever, but I am very pleased with results. Especially as I have never grown under these lights before and I have changed the pots/medium I am using.

LED buds are on the left, HPS buds on the right. Left buds were grown using LED the lighter colored buds were grown under HPS. The buds are smaller due to being from the bottom of a turkey bag (shake if you will).

I don't think it is exclusively the source of the lighting as it is the fact that led companies are going the wrong way with spectrum for the sole purpose of µmole/joule dick swinging bragging rights.

For a 5x5 you want the 480W drivers in there. We normally pair a 320W driver with each Longboard in a 4x4.

I need to push @Grow Lights Australia (are you reading this?) to update his website to reflect all the new products coming out.
