First attempt at cloning

I figured I'd give it a try and see if it's something I want to do regularly. I Don't have a smaller more adequate spot to work so gonna have to use the tent. I think I'll be able to keep the environment decent enough (hopefully) just not sure about light. I have a 400w turned down to 25%. Could use some insight on the light needs please. And of course any other tips, comments or suggestions please and thanks

Clones don't need a lot of light. and lighting should be placed indirectly. This will avoid stress. Check out this cloning video from build a soil. Jeremey is awesome! You don't have follow his method to the T but he breaks things down and helps your navigate the way you want to clone. Good luck and I hope you root her.

I didn't watch the video, but T5 lighting is more than sufficient. And as @Herb & Suds said, the clear cup inside the red cup is handy to see root growth at a glance. Although your cup does not look like the standard 16oz solo cup. Is that the shot cup size? If so, no biggie, you can up pot to 16oz soon, and then get the clears. If you ever get the chance to use Rapid Rooters with a humidity dome and heat mat, that's the way to go.

Too much light and they won't root
T8s t5s twisty CFLs all good for cloning. I just use a 2ft sunblaster t5 and it's a few inches above the dome. Warm substrate helps. I set my heatmat from 75-78 depending on my room temp. I also keep them far away from other plants. Sometimes they 'dampen off'. It's a fungus. I don't want to be spreading that around my other plants. I also use a 'dummy' plug that I just stick the temp probe into. That way I'm accurately measuring the temp at the root zone. If you hang it above the cuts (probe). It'll always think it's too cold and keep the heat mat on cooking the plugs.

I've also taped the probe to the heat mat. Takes a bit getting the temp right, but 80 seems to work good. This way, I don't have to mess with the probe coming out when I "vent" the dome by taking it off every day and shaking it out, or just checking for roots. May not be that big a deal if you just have 1 tray, but I run 3 trays, 150 cuts.

I doubt you will need anything more than you already have. Is your tent in veg, or do you have a separate area to place them? Idk if I have a rabbits foot up my arse or what, but I got roots in a 73F/40% RH environment. This is a wooden chest that’s next to my tent.. with a small hydroponic unit.. however I’m just using it for the light. No rooting hormone, no humidity dome or seedling mat. Under the rigged set up is the cut that I rooted in a Pepsi can. 10 days later I noticed good roots starting.. After 2 more weeks in the water.. it went into a solo cup. It may be female.. no balls! Fingers crossed for that! 2 other cuts were rooted (1 in a water bottle.. the other in a McDonald’s cup) and sexed out using this method. . After 14 days.. they started growing balls since it was under 12/12... that was 2 less males in my tent scrapped early due to the method used. I literally just winged it & it worked. You MUST have a rabbits foot up your arse!.. Good on ya tho for making roots at 40%rh... impressive!

They need such little light it’s almost un-believable. Im running a 95w led cranked all the way down 5-10% with atleast a foot between the lights and the clones. So far so good. Granted that’s with 24/0, so the extra DLI helps.

This is where they focus on rooting instead of vegetive growth. I did go back and watch that video link. The low light takes the pressure off of vegging, and more on rooting. Good info Milky!.. and @CaliRootz88 !

Don’t let my confidence fool you, its mostly blindly experimenting! :D I did not know that, need to watch the video I was just sharing what I tried recently.

Don't complicate things. Just throw that thing in a humidome or in a ziplock that's big enough and leave it for about a week and you should be good.
Usually takes about 4-7 days to get these type of results.
Planted and left in the dome without acclimating. Once rooted, it takes about a day or 2 to acclimate and process is completed.

Hey man, experiments are great teachers!. I've done some crazy shit trying to figure out stuff. Extreme PH swings, high heat with CO2, super feeding, under feeding, low temps at the end, etc. That's what make this hobby fun. ...or a living, depending on what State you live in.

The only way to do things imo. That was a good video, I’m using the lower light level to see if I can get away rooting without a humidity dome. Current RH is 50-55%, its only been 48h but no curling or stressed clones yet.
I also tried taking the clones 6 days into flip to flower, Im wondering if the extra vigor the mothers put out in early flower will help the clones. (That’s my official excuse, I was just lazy and took cuts too late ;)

I can always point you in the right direction for this sweet McCloner I picked up. I laugh.. but I’m as serious as herpies when I say it worked like a charm.

These pics are from 1/13 - 10 days after the snip and dropped in water. The cut leaves are serving as nutrition, and the plant was starting to eat.

I let it sit for another 5-6 days and make parts started popping up everywhere! It was time to go.
