Finding phenos

So my issue is that I don’t have the space or the resources to really Pheno hunt the strains I want to grow, so how do I get that fire, where can I get reliable genetics?

If you're in US...I just ran a few strains from Ethos ( Cherry Garcia, Skunk Hero, Apex) and they're all super nice genetics imo. Once I switched to US genetics I noticed my plants have a much stronger skunky/dank smell compared to the strains I got from overseas.

I ran a small pheno hunt with 13 seeds. 11 germinated. Of those, 7 made it out of veg and 5 were female. Those 5 were ran in a 3x3 tent under a very short veg. Ended up with two phenos that I'm happy with. You don't have to run 100s of seeds and take up a ton of space for a successful pheno hunt.

Anything from a reputable seedbank should do you alright. Ethos and Humboldt seed co have a few that are known for stability. But you really don’t need to do a big hunt to find a keeper. Just grow a few and keep a mom from the one you liked best. Big pheno hunts are more about finding something that works at scale in a particular environment than finding magic super hype weed.

Just part of the grower struggle. The things we have to complain about. I always hate thinking about taking a plant out of my rotation to hunt for a better one. But like stated above. Good genetics go a long way. I stick with sensi, and Mr nice, barney's farm, sweet seeds, ace, Humboldt, ect. Learn your breeders and you'll start to know what you have after you have grown about 20 beans. You'll know if its a producer, dense buds, extra frosty vs what you've seen and expect and it will help you not clone the ones you don't like. You can still get a clone off of a flowering plant if you have to. I usually cut clones right as i introduce my plant to the flower tent but you can take them from a flowering plant and reveg.

Many think the pollen chuckers are going through hundreds and thousands of different plants. They're wrong.

Just grow within your limits. If you can do a 10 pack you can generally find something pretty solid. Find 1 or 2 that you like, keep those and build off that. When you find something better discard the weakest link. Eventually you will have some really nice keepers.

Elite is all in the eye of the beholder. What is elite to me may not be to others. I’ve grown and have access to quite a few clone only genetics and most the time those don’t even make it past 4/5 runs before I discard them for something new. It’s rare to find something to stick around long term, once you have a nice stable of keepers.

When you find something you think is interesting or really like, share it with friends. You may want to come back it later realizing it was better than you initially thought, had traits you love/want to pass on or lost it due to mislabel/variety of reasons. Once it’s gone, unless you gifted it out, your not getting it back. Has happened too many times to me. Don’t be stingy with genetics you value.

Thank you this is most likely how im gonna use the 4x4 space I have, maybe start with 20 seeds and try and get 4 standout females. Thank you everyone for the advice

I'd was planning this, I have an A5 box full of seeds. But the rise in energy costs has killed the idea. Keeping all of those clones and mothers alive is just going to be too expensive.

Good luck with it.

I personally don't take clones/cuttings from other grows it can contaminate your grow. Pop some seeds and grow them in small pots, flip them early and the ones you like keep the ones that you didn't like throw out.

In a new situation, i like establishing something really good in my gardeb with a few fems from different sources. Once I have one or two i like, i move forward with regular seeds in two gallon pots, and either do cuttings or re-veg. Through this process, i try and end up with my two three favorites- a small stable. Try to keep it a fun hobby, and always learning. When it becomes a logistical headache, simplify. Fems have been the fastest path to really good herb, regulars seem to be the wildcard winners after a couple cycles, and slowly the stable transitions over to cuts from regulars
