I need to put the soil in the pots instead of repeatedly amending and tilling my clay dirt. I would need to build a frame for shade cloth if I was going to put some up. They are only 16' tall, no shade from them.I guess at that size they could provide shade too, but would you need the soil?
It gets really hot here also, mostly they just quit producing. I read that the heat dries out the pollen so they can't be fertilized.with the heat you get, they probably stew themselves on the vine, huh?
i've got to worry about frost in September here with tons of green ones still on the vine. lol.It gets really hot here also, mostly they just quit producing. I read that the heat dries out the pollen so they can't be fertilized.
Nope, I'm lazy. I pick the green tomatoes about November and either fry them up, or bag them to ripen on their own.do you do the paintbrush trick with the tomato flowers? my neighbor taught me that one.

I have my first tomato! This is usually how it goes though. I'll get a few then the heat hits and goodbye tomatoes.

Bitters are a very underutilized ingredient in cooking.I grabbed a bunch of produce for minestrone/vegetable soup. Ive had a hankering Need a new stock pot so threw it in the crock pot. Potatoe, cherry tomatoe, asparagus, mirepoix, mushroom, bell pepper, garlic, bay leaves, basil, oregano, couple dashes angostura bitters, s n p, some veg broth, rest water, shell pasta, beans. Have enough for two batches so I better buckle down. Grabbed a ham too.
