Are you thinking a multiple choice potential mass murderer test? Or a firearm safety and legal course with an essay question asking whats the first thing you are going to do with your new gun? That would flag the low IQ and deeply fanatical ones. But some would slip thru the cracks.
The CDC says firearms are a public health hazard. So is open sewage, pollution, dirty drinking water. The public reports those public health problems right. But with the point of firearms they want no responsibility, but for the government to act in their best interest. That never really works out for the citizens IMO.
Consult the laws where you reside. In fact there's laws and protocols in all 50 states and on the federal level to deal with potentially harmful/terroristic threats.
This gets back to laws weak on enforcement. And subjective decisions made by people in charge of vetting and acting on the threats.

Jumping to a solution just makes things worse.

First, you are pissing in the wind. Nothing will change until there is consensus in this country that change is necessary. Republicans and the SCOTUS that they packed with reactionary justices will obstruct change. We have a background checking system that is broken. It is understaffed, underfunded and doesn't allow enough time to evaluate every application that contains red flags. Efforts to change that are blocked. So, while I'm not saying you are right or wrong, just saying now is not the time for pushing hard for the kind of draconian, bureaucratic control system you propose.

I'm not aware that anybody even knows enough to honestly say they know what should be done. Given the way our legislative system is stopped up, I'm more of a mind to support study and evaluation of what has worked well in other countries and to raise our level of knowledge on the subject of gun violence. Let people who know something about what works put a system of solid recommendations based upon fact and analysis before our lawmakers and maybe we can stop treating gun violence as a whack a mole game.

Are you saying “laws don’t work so why bother”? Just trying to clarify? Honestly I doubt more laws limiting ownership would work at this juncture. What I do think would be a start is a federally regulated training course to obtain and possess guns.

More I’m not particularly concerned law abiding citizens having access to firearms. I believe in the general good of people. Sure there are many legally owned guns that wind up being used by their rightful owners to break the law; but by and large the millions of gun owners out there are not a threat and in my opinion are inherently good people, as most are.

Its people who have no regard for any laws to begin with that should be targeted for correction or reduced freedoms. If we want to “get tougher on guns” when this person was arrested previously for:

then why the hell was he released back on the streets where he could terrorize innocent people again? Violent crime should be treated as abhorrent and until prosecutors and judges stop being soft on people who are violent toward others, the system/society will not change.

Our prisons should be empty of non violent criminals and full of the violent ones instead. It should be frightening to face prison, right now there seems to be minimal deterrent. The platform of “guns are bad” has no effect on bad people.

We’re (Canada) debating a provincial ban on personal handgun ownership. I for one think that is a step backward and would favour a federal (national) ban. IMO handguns serve no purpose other than to kill a person or as a hobby and giving up a hobby to save lives is an easy decision IMO.

I respect your opinion and believe you have good intentions. I disagree as there are enough illegal handguns in North America to last for decades in the hands of criminals who would circumvent said bans. Leaving those good citizens defenseless

(this plays out in extreme and constant reality for citizens of Mexico, where any caliber above .38 in a handgun is nearly impossible to own. Leaving them at the mercy of the cartels and corrupt policeman)
