Open Outdoor Auto Thread, 2022

Depending on your latitude and climate, you may have already started your outdoor (or for those in the southern hemisphere, you're ending it?). I'm around 45.5n in NW Oregon, and I'll soak my seeds this Friday and start them in one gallon pots in the garage. Last year the first heatwave hit June 1st, and forced me out of the garage early because it got too hot in there. We'll see what this year brings. The plan is to put them outside in their final pots, end of the first week in June.

Feel free to post your grows and progress, I'd love to see all the outdoor gardens.

43.5 deg latt.last years ealy june riser, 4in soil depth hit eaves trough by 1st week of august, started preflower early julý. Another auto inpot to left, no photos even preflowering yet, l guess autos are coming along but l bred these, crap king seeds ww fem auto and male came out of pack fem yeah! But is crossed with cheese quake, critical mass, black domina and jack herer as well as a few others over the last 8 or 9 or 10 years afghanni landrace in there too.

Got 4 going just now. Been indoors under a cfl for the first week. Reason being it shaves a good 2-3 weeks off the grow time. Maybe more if planted in cooler conditions. Will be outdoors now until harvest.

biggest one is 8 days old other 3 are 7 days

Love how perky they are in sunlight compared to artificial lighting.

Strains are Kosher Cake, mimosa cake, green crack and purple punch. All fastbuds. Kosher cake and purple punch are rated for cold climates so will see how they fair compared to the other two.

Biggest reason is warmth. Don’t need much Light until 10 days plus so all about ambient temps. Keep them warm for the fastest growth possible (with respectable Lighting ofc)

Starting in something smaller doesn’t always mean quicker growth. Just establishes a better root system in the pots. Reason I started in cups was im only using a 2x2 tent atm so no space for the final pots.

That makes sense. So far my garage is holding at around 75-78ºF, hopefully that's warm enough. It does cool off at night, but I have heat out there to keep it above 66º. I'm not looking for monster plants this year, I just want them to finish early and be healthy.

I do give my sprouts a good amount of light, otherwise I find they stretch too much. When I started growing, it was photos from clones, and clone cuttings need a more gentle light while they root out, but I've often been surprised at how much light my sprouts seem to need to avoid getting tall and floppy.

Beautiful plants! You got a head start on me, so far this is all I have for this summer, took this picture this morning...



...it's a RocBud Pineapple Sunrise. First one to pop. We'll see who else joins her, I've got a few more on the way.

Yeah that’s a good temp. I guess they can handle sunlight at a young age which doesn’t fade in intensity over a few feet. Mine are starting to stretch a little with all this cloud cover, were spoilt with the cfl as well

The end of last season I realized that the trees to the east of my yard have been getting taller, and now my yard doesn't get direct sunlight until around noon. I think that's why I had so much bud rot last year, and had it as early as August 1st -- because the morning dew wasn't cooking off. I'm contemplating hanging some lights in my structure to the east of the plants, that would extend a couple of hours of "direct" light time, hopefully add some warmth, and if I hang them off to the side at an angle, they won't block the sun once it's in line overhead. There are logistical issues I need to work out, but it's something I'm pondering.

I'll keep the plants in smaller pots this year (5 gallon -- last year a couple were in 10 gallon and a few in 7 gallon) so it should be easier to line them all up on the sunny side of the structure. I had 87.5% germinate, one didn't pop but I started more than I need, so I'm off to a good start. The rest is up to the weather.

The beginning always feels like it takes forever. The cooler spring we're having has made it easier to regulate the temps in the garage, so that's nice. Last season I had two or three waves of germination, this year is simpler since they're all the same age.



Only one seed didn't pop (a Meph freebie), and I have one that's not doing well. This is the second time I've tried to germinate a Dutch Passion Brooklyn Sunrise. The first time it didn't pop at all, this time it sprouted but is super weak and kind of deformed. I'm curious about it, so I'll just let it go until the others go outside. If it manages to grow some actual leaves, I'll keep it around. Last summer I had a plant that took forever to throw its shell and I didn't think it would make it, in the end it never got big but it produced some really nice buds when it finished.

Ive had some bad luck in the past with Dutch passion germ rates. And a few retards too!

But I’m intrigued by Brooklyn sunrise as I’ve got a few on me just now.

Yeah, that one is *slowly* pushing out some leaves, so I'll let it keep going. Probably end out off to the side in a 2 gallon pot, maybe I'll get a decent sample out of it. Those that struggle that hard are the only ones I don't top.

Found a surprise this morning. I've learned over the years when a seed doesn't pop, just put it aside and see what happens. Sure enough, 8 full days after all the others broke ground my only seed not to germinate finally popped. Hopefully she'll make it, it's a Meph freebie (Samsquatch x Forum Stomper) that in an AFN thread was a common favorite among the freebies.

Some quick pics -- one of the normal ones as a reference, working on its third set of leaves (day 8 since popped), then the Brooklyn Sunrise working on making any leaves at all, and the last is the late bloomer

Given how bad a finish I had last year (lost about half to bud rot/mold), half of what I'm growing this year are freebies.

Thanks! I went a little nuts buying seeds at the beginning of the pandemic. The Jammy Dodgers was an impulsive 4/20 purchase.

The weather sure is a wild card. Last year we had early heat waves, this year has been cool and wet which works well for me because it makes it easier to regulate the temps in the garage. So as starts go, I kind of lucked out so far this May. I would have to have a miraculous summer weather-wise to grow without starting them - and sometimes finishing them - in the garage.

My outdoor grow structure was an experimental plastic/bug netting hybrid idea I had, which in the end didn't work as hoped. This year I'm going simpler. I used to grow under just bug netting held up by hoops, so I'm going to convert the structure to just a bug netting house this summer, and then contemplate making it into a true greenhouse next year.

Bad news with a silver lining side note: Bad news, our peach tree died over the winter. Silver lining - it was starting to shade out the greenhouse, so I should get morning sun about an hour earlier with it gone.

I mistakenly thought they couldn't grow well in cold temps. So I just ran 2 of my own auto seeds, now it's open season all year. The rest are the autos I've got going thus far, week 6, 3 are topped, 1 I topped everything I could while I could, 1 I broke main steam off whilst lst. The rest are just trained. I meant to do 3 top 3 lst and 3 just let grow but I've never lst a outdoor auto before and got carried away. Normally outdoors I'll just let the sun move over the sky and work its magic. Using defoliation and tucking over training

that's true, different environments have different outcomes, means and methods. I'll try to grow more indica or indica dominate in cooler months vise versa for hot months. That seems to help with growth. The ones I grew during winter are cotton candy kush, from Pacific seed bank, via myself. I'll buy 3 if I like the strain I'll use tiresias mist on the third.
