Okay next question: if the exhaust vent in the tent is a fabric tube 8 inches diameter diameter, will a 4- or 6- inch fan function well enough? I

yeah, for the lights you have, a 4 inch fan should be enough, but they last a lot longer if you run them at about 75% power, so i would recommend a 6 inch. if they don't come with an adjustment knob, you can buy a router controller at most hardware outlets, harbor freight, home depot.com, that kind of place. you plug the fan in and can adjust the speed of it with the router controller

And if you go with 6inch a very good quality and sounds super silent because of the housing but its something that's gonna last for years and years is vortex s-600 inlinefan

whatever fan you get, if the noise it produces is an issue, you can wrap an old blanket around it, old towels, it cuts down a lot on the noise. i also found that mounting them to a 2X4 and putting a piece of rubberized shelf liner under it cuts down a lot of it too.
