Too many tops for outdoor?

That makes sense I guess but I usually trim mine at ground level once i see budrot. Pm I’ll fight with

With the loot i gamble on the hobby and a 6 plant limit id rather lose than strive for popcorn
That being said i have made a conscience effort to downsize my outdoor plants but it has nothing to do with wanting smaller colas and everything to do with ease of maintenance and getting away from ladders

Good air flow prevents that. In a 2 x 4 two plant SCROG, on average, we'll get 30-40 pretty large tops and 50-60 secondary layer nuggets approaching the size of my thumbs. 3 fans circulating 24 x 7 throughout the tent prevents bud rot and grey mold.
Couldn't agree more, though where i live the there is dew every morning from august until the winter in october. I found a good way to prevent rot is to build a roof over plants but it's not always possible. I'd consider 30-40 tops a large number of smaller colas, not necessarly small but not large like baseball bat + size. Smaller colas doesn't mean popcorn buds

My days of trying to impress myself, which can be fun, are over. I aim for yield regardless of shape or cola size.

I tend to pay more attention to air flow and heavy defoliation 1/2 to 3/4 the way through flower. Seems like the flower (calyx) development is fuller and just plain prettier. Not that it make a lot of difference once it hits the grinder. Lol

Thank you!

My ladies range from 15-25ish cola's now, so I guess I will have a good side by side comparison.
Any reason for 16? Does size or strain affect that number in anyway?
If you are making a manifold plant at least one of the tutorials here says 16 tips gives more weight than 32. That's probably where the 16 comes in. According to them (on this type of grow) after 16 the buds are less than half size of the 16.

Your plant looks like something I'd like to grow.:hump:

Just passing on what I've heard.

So the smaller manifold will produce higher yields than a larger manifold?

As one who has done small manifolds, larger manifolds and fully spread 2 x 4 SCROG's, I found no difference in either the sizes of the cured bud or the final cured weights.

Same strains ... same flower light ... identical grow environment ...
  • 2 x 4 SCROG = 14.7 oz.
  • Large Manifold = 12.3 oz.
  • Small manifold = 10.8 oz.
The yields were proportional to the overall grow space used as opposed to the grow method.

Yield is wholly dependent on the nutrients and type of nutrients available at different times in the life of your plant.

You've probably heard over and over "know your plant". The downside for most is that by the time you really know a strain/plant, it's time to move onto another. I'm partial to GG4 and BDream so I'll be growing them forever.

I'm glad to know that. Like I said, "I heard...". When someone asks how much they can from a 2x4 scrog I wont be able to tell them because mine is 4x4. So I'll just say "Someone posted that they get...".

The reason I want a manifold is last year someone did a tutorial and I just want to. It will probably end up as a SCROG. After looking at your numbers I'm not sure I can get enough to do any good from a manifold.

In the last couple of weeks two cases of diabetes showed up. I don't have any strains for that so I ordered Diet Durbin THCV:THC. That's why you talked me into the SCROG.

Thanks:hump:

Those three yields were with a Viparspectra blurple no less. That was the only light that I have done all three types of grows with and I needed to compare apples with apples. I've since upgraded to Timber 3000K COB's. I have only done a small manifold with them and pulled 16.3 oz. Starting in the fall I will be trying a large manifold and then doing a full SCROG to see what I can pull.

Partially ... nutrients can play an important role in the final yield. But after flowering with blurples and now the COB's - using the same Remo nutrients each time in the same environment - final yield is rather dependent upon the quality of your lighting. Just swapping out the lights increased the yields by nearly 6 oz.

@StareCase, I take it that you do all indoor growing? I do usually just keep from getting cabin fever in the winter. It's good until flower time. The grow room is next to my lab (such as it is) and light leaks in. I work late so need to plug light leaks.

Yes I do. Many years ago I did a couple of successful outdoor grows when I had the entire day of full sun. And I would love to do one lady outdoors during the summer as well as the tent grow. But just like in real estate, location location location is vital! Too many tall trees don't provide that same full sunlight as I had before. It's pretty filtered by the thick canopies.

Use large beach towels.

I am sure that there are leaks in my tent too and I keep the VEG area about 3' away. So to plug the leaks I will drape a large beach towel over the entire side of the tent that faces the VEG area. I clip them to the top of the tent with those big black alligator clips and let it drape down. Not much light leaks through thick terrycloth.

The leaks aren't that bad. I never worried about before and have had only one go hermi but this grow is important enough to put the effort out. The door is a plastic accordion door that light shines through and behind it is some aluminum faced bubble wrap insulation that I roll up like a window shade. All is realy fairly good.

BTW, I see you are from Canada. We have had a pair of your geese take up residence on our pond. They raised four little ones that are almost fully grown. The really cool thing is the pond was built in1970 or 71 and this is the first water foul ever hatched here. The critters always got the eggs but we have donkeys now and they keep the critters away. I hand feed them about a quart of corn every day. They come when I call and follow me around. They bring us a lot of pleasure and I hope they stay.
