I once was gifted some White Diesel BX3 seeds....I had no idea what an auto was...until I grew these. The seedlings looked a bit "off" from what I was used to seeing. A few weeks later, under the 18/6 veg lighting schedule, they started flowering. I was completely confused as to what I was doing wrong to make these plants begin flowering.

I started reading around and it suddenly hit me...These are auto flowering plants. I had no prejudice against them at that time and just let them do their thing. The buds started stacking, but they looked weird, somehow. When I finally got down to taking a couple buds out of the curing jar, I just had a funny feeling that they weren't going to taste right. The smell wasn't like what I was used to. I smoked a single bong hit and the taste reminded me of the smell of one of those salt cakes that are in men's rooms urinals.

I thought maybe I could press some flower rosin and it would taste better....nope.
I threw the whole batch out and didn't regret it. I assumed it was the ruderalis component that gave it that taste. And ever since then, whenever I see a plant that has those big, fat, "abnormal" looking colas with those jagged, fat pistils, they always turn out to be some kind of auto.

I'm going to stick to growing photo period plants from here on. Autos aren't for me. I like to be in complete control of the flowering cycle of the plants I grow and I believe that photo period plants have the tastes that I'm after and that anything with ruderalis in it, just might remind me of piss-deodorizer again. no...just no.
did you mean to post this in a thread about autos vs photos.

So you grew "weird" random mystery plants that tasted like pisscakes and had no potency and think all autoflowering strains are like that? A LOT of people grow and love autos (me included), do you think that would be the case if they were all as bad as you described? One of my favourite strains as of late was Mephisto Genetics Fugue State (Amnesia Haze cross). ACE Seeds has autoflowering versions of their Malawi and Zamaldelica, they're supposedly pretty good auto sativas as well.
I have no idea what other people consider to be good tasting weed, these days. I grew up in the 70's and the weed I knew was not auto flowering. In fact, I couldn't tell you when all the auto flowering fad started up. So when I happened onto some seeds and grew them out, it was a first for me....and a last for me, too. Since that time, I have read and heard other people saying the same things about autflowering strains -they taste "funny".
It's just a matter of what one's experience is, I guess. If a person starts out tasting auto flower weed and develops a taste for it, then maybe it tastes great to them. Maybe not all auto flower strains have that component to them. I haven't grown every strain in the world. I just combine my own experience with other growers who have said similar things in their experience when it comes to auto flowers.

First I've heard of people saying autoflowers tasting "funny". I doubt you or anyone else could smoke an autoflower or photo blindfolded and be able to tell the difference.

I don't know about that, but maybe you're right. The funny taste I detected was pretty distinctive and unlike anything I had smoked up to that point. If even a hint of it was in other auto flower strains, then I think I'd be able to distinguish it pretty easily. After reading lots of stuff since that time, it's clear that it wasn't just a one-in-a-million, fluke plant that only I had stumbled onto. Nope. I found lots of similar comments and similar experience stories.
Plus, if I couldn't tell the difference in a blindfold test, then what would be the point in my growing an auto flower plant over a photo period plant? Maybe if auto flowers were somehow "better" than a photoperiod plants, it would make sense. But if they are the same, then why would I want to relinquish total control of the growth cycle? If they are the same, then photo period plants are still more fun and challenging to grow. I'm just a hobbyist grower, after all. I don't have to grow on any kind of schedule or anything. Anyway, your experience is different from mine.

Could you link a couple of the "lots of similar comments"? Like I said first I've ever heard of it.

There's nothing "more fun and challenging" to growing photoperiod plants either. If anything it's more challenging to grow and autoflower plant.

If you're really interested in learning why people grow autoflowers there's an entire thread discussing it.

LOL! I actually took some of my time and looked around for some of the commentary I had read years ago....I couldn't find the discussions....If I do run across them, then I will link them. However, someone on this very thread already commented that what I said about auto flowers was also true, in their experience, as well. You'll have to go back to find it. That's as good as I can do for now.

As far as growing, I prefer photo period plants because they are what I know. In my limited experience with auto flowering plants, I was put off by them.

I read the thread that you linked....welll...I glossed over it, anyway. It just seemed like people getting really defensive about their auto flowers being as good as photo period plants. I get it.

I don't think people here get so defensive about autos so much. It's more not wanting to add to the "I heard it somewhere" stuff that tends to go around forums.

I was on a cannabis forum 20 years ago and some folks were growing and experimenting with autos back then.
In the developing stages, auto breeders had a hard time with potency and taste. Not so much these days, but still it takes a lot of time and skill to breed great autos.

Dutch Passion, Mephisto, HSO all have great autos. Others that are late in the game may be hit and miss.

Sorry to help hijack this thread. o_O

Most of the auto threads go that way. Sensitive bunch.
The reason autos arent as good is because its a cross with a low thc ruderalis.
Even the auto breeder wants as little of those genetics as possible. That is why you see so many threads with auto's that dont automatically flower.

Hey bk78,
Seed from Twenty20. It really is everything they promise quality-wise. Very strong, happy up with a controlling mind power at the onset. Flavors are very potent sour and fruit, like. Sour orange flavor mostly. 7oz from a compact mainline plant.

Grow it in your hydro you got some serious bomb but it takes a long time to finish.

Does not create large continuous colas but is quality top to bottom with little larf.

This pic is from end of week 6. View attachment 5156090
Functional?

So low THC means it’s not a good smoke?

I'm sorry but that's a ridiculous statement and you clearly don't have much experience with autoflower. People spend an awful lot of time bashed autoflower. Don't like em don't grow em.. :eyesmoke: :peace:

I figured out the solution, let get that guy with his Nympho fly high bullshit to make autoflower, problem solved...your welcome

You've put 10 weeks of flower into it, why on earth would you throw it out, that's a lot of time & effort invested just to start over...and you're not going to 'catch up' with an earlier harvest by throwing plants away and re-starting.

Also, assuming that people grow just to churn-and-burn plants that are fast harvesting is probably a mistake. I decided to try my hand at sativas because I don't need 90 or 100-day grows. I don't sell and we don't go through enough of it. I'd rather go long a couple times a year.

Once the ones I'm doing now are done (at about 70d of flower now, at 117 total for the grow), I'm going to shut down the tent until we hit fall and do another round.
Let me rephrase I don't "throw them out" literally. I throw out the genetics and don't continue growing them. I let the plants finish and harvest them. It's my impatience getting the best of me.
