I see a lot of pics with the leaves more spread and more space in between is it because of defoilation and if so should I start?

You could snip off those lower leaves that are browning, anything that touches your grow medium should get cut off imo.

Some has to do with how close the light is , raise the light and make them stretch a little for it ….and yes like op said trim up the ones sitting on the dirt …
