hey zoob...

If you leave those clones in the water to long.. won't they be difficult to transfer to soil..? I suspect this is true..because plants produce different kinds of roots when they are in water.. as opposed to soil... and well established water roots will suffer heavy losses in soil.... and if the plant has reached a certain point.. it can even die... at least suffer tremendous shock...

have you had this problem at all.. ??? How long do you leave themin the water after seeing the first "legs"....

BTW-- your roots look fantastic..

I have a question if you don't mind:

Was thinking of picking one of these up, my first time ...and need something simple....I want something in the <$200 range..I could build a grow-box myself I suppose...but this looks very interesting.

Question: have you discovered what the other lighting settings are ? I can't seem to find any information on what the automated lighting cycles are for this thing.

I've tried doing searches for lighting cycles for various plants (tomatoes, lettuce, etc..)...but can't seem to find any info.

Right, i didn't realise they were going to be transferred to soil. Seems a little counter-productive. Can't you just leave them in the tank?

Ok..since it's fairly cheap and self contained, and I liked Tek's experience so far...I went ahead and ordered one of these.

I plan on starting from seed in each of the 7 containers, from some unknown strain of really good stuff that I happened to find some seeds and thought to save them. I'm hoping that at least 4 of them will turn female. If I do get a male, I may continue to grow it and then polenate a few of the flowers on the females to keep the strain going (I don't have the setup or the means for doing the clones/mother plant thing).

Anyway, after the plants have 3 nodes on them, I will top them (to try and manage the heights)...and then once each of the new tops has 2 nodes I will put them into flowering....this should hopefully put them at about 4-5" tall ..which should be a good height to start flowering, and by topping them, it will allow the seedlings the full 30 days to mature.

I figure short and bushy is the way to go with this. I don't think I'll get much yeild..maybe 1/2 oz from each of the 4 plants if i'm lucky..but hell...I can't complain about that!

I will try to do as Tek did, and post some progress pictures, and welcome the advice of everyone here! Wish me luck...

Clones are easy. I do mine in a ceramic cookware dish, and cover it with cling-film. A couple of cheap household flourescents should do the trick. Rockwool cubes are cheap, and you don't even need cloning hormone. Just make sure they don't dry out and also make sure they have access to blue light.

I am glad to see you have joined me in this venture....

I can't wait to see how all your set ups turns out, I love how each of you have your own Ideas and methods for growing with this machine, each different from the others.... This is great because then we can all compare notes on this thing and figure out the best way to grow with the aerogarden...

Post pics and progress frequently please...

I'll have updates in a couple days, But they are doing great and WHite hairs are starting to come out of everywhere! :)

I go from the fish tank to an Emily's Garden setup with net pots and bubblers and soon they will be going into aero tubes. So I'm not sure of the effects it have on planting in soil.

hey, from a post from a while ago...the light setting is 17/7 but if you look at my post "aerogarden v.2" it will show how i put a new timer on the setup and it worked great. no splicing needed

Which setting is 17/7? I know salad greens and pretty sure herbs/basil is 16.5/7.5 and i know peppers/tomatoes are 16/8

Not sure about the flowers or strawberry settings

I am using the flower setting instead. I am HOPING that flowering requires the same lighting as flowering weed. I'll have to see. It's been about a week and a half. I have 2-3 plants growing in all but 2 pods (all bag seed). I figure I will keep those 2 open for clones. I'll have to cut back on a couple plants, I think, but I'm letting them grow for now.

Here's a thought. If one could get the plant to grow indefinately, with or without flowering, couldn't one harvest the leaves and make hash? I have some house plants I grow that just produce tons of leaves. I think it'd be pretty easy to do in this AND I had seen a number of hash receipes calling for clippings and trimmings. Now...a never ending supply of hash...that works for me.

Brnpiper, Do you mean you have 2-3 plants in one pod? Hmmm different...
Also, you have it on the flower setting? So can you tell me what the lighting interval is for that setting? i.e. 18/6 or somthing

And if you place clones in those last two slots the other plants will already be pretty big by the time you place them in there (if your getting the clones from the plants that are in there) and the clones wont get enough light....

Get us some pics and show us your progress...Pleeeease

P.S. I saw an infomercial very early this morning on the aerogarden, this thing is awesome it made me want to buy another one...lol

I checked this out on the internet, and the machines they are selling look very small... i like the idea, but i need something for 50 plants. I like what i saw in your pic's Tek, like a big fish-tank... but I couldn't find anything like it on the web. Have you designed your own aerogarden? I would like to attempt this... if you could feed me the basic principles, I'd be obliged.

Not all the roots can be in the solution at the bottom of the tank... so how is the plant supported from sinking? I'm having difficulty understanding this method, maybe you can enlighten me a little?

Ha, Skunk my friend, it is much simpler than it seems you are percieving it....

What couldn't you find on the internet? The aerogarden?

I have slighty altered the design of the aerogarden, when I cut the lighting hood power cord and spliced in a longer wire, allowing for it to be raised higher...

What do you mean? the resivoir can hold all the roots. the plant is supported by these cartridges or hoppers... I'll post some pics soon of what I mean by these terms...

It is such a simple desgin and it works great...

I believe that for roots to be able to grow through dirt it takes a lot of energy from the plant. When growing hydro/aero like this the roots can grow freely with no resistence, saving energy for growing the plant and leaves.

This is why it will grow quicker and I believe (will find out soon) harvest quicker...

Yea, it's definately not for the more serious grower..I picked one of these up also (well, I ordered one from the internet). I plan on using it to grow 2-4 very small plants..hopefully they will yeild a 1/4 oz - 1/2 oz each. I am going to try and keep them small enough so that I don't have to splice the wiring, etc.

Can anyone enlighten me on the best way to keep the plants small ? I was thinking that I would flower them a bit early (maybe at 2-3 weeks), and trim off lots of leaves to stunt the growth a little....is there a better method ? is there a "pruning and trimming" guide anywhere that explains the best methods to train the plants to stay small ? I'm talking smaaaal...the entire unit raises up to 21" (probably leaves about 15" for the actual plant itself).
