I'm sure that the taproot has to be up because it curls down when it grows and springs the seed coating upwards, if you plant it down it has to grow around to get the leverage to spring the seed coating up. There are diagrams you can find to explain this.

i got your diagram hanging, my friend. IMG_9660.jpg

i'm being a funny guy. :mrgreen::mrgreen:

i know when growing in the wild they do drop on the floor then the taproot pops out bends itself over to give itself leverage and digs in but indoors when your putting it into a medium that will support it and give it leverage anyway why would you need to worry about it

when the taproot first comes out it bends over to dig in that is what I mean by leverage, cant speak for the other guy, all i know is if you place a seed in taproot down the root grows straight down if you put it in taproot up then it will grow back down over the seed and again grow straight down so it makes no difference the plant just insictively wants to survive and does whats neccesary

it bends over because it's curled up in the shell that way. as it grows it straightens out. anybody ever seen a chicken hatch?

So now what do I do? After it sprouted, I put the seed, taproot down (white part) 3/8 to a 1/2" in the soil. It came up with the shell still intact. Should it fall off in a day or two or should I give it time and try and knock it off when it gets bigger?
that was ur first problem, you put the tap root UP...it naturally curves down when it grows, putting it down will make a backwards N shape of the tap root...then the plant wastes energy doing that, maybe that is why it doesnt have enuf to shed the shell

Sigh. The tap root is supposed to wend its way through the soil.It makes it strong, and you want strong.I planted all my taproots down, and only one had a shell stuck, and that was prolly cuz I was a noob and didn't want to wait.

they are supposed to start facing up...putting them facing down increases the chance that they wont even sprout if they use all their energy winding that root...u do know that until they break the surface they have a set amount of energy dont you? its that way til they hit the light and photosynthesis can start...good luck having them wind around and waste energy moving side to side instead of straight down...going straight down = longer tap root...tap roots of at least 4 inches have been proven to have higher instances of female plants...so yeah, to each his own, even if his own is wrong :-/

so we're all wrong? ok then. :eyesmoke:

should be like a chicken.... if it doesnt get out its shell without help, then it wont be strong enough to survive.......learned that in 3rd grade.

it's an illusion see the plant really grows downward and the leaves pop out the bottom and spiral up the side of the plant outside the container. you have to turn the container upside-down in order to water properly:eyesmoke:

Ok.I'm gonna say this one more time. The plant is NOT THE TAP ROOT.The tap root grows downward, gets established, and the sprout comes later.Period.I have personally planted all of mine downward.ONE got the shell stuck.OUT OF TWELVE.I was a noob.So everything else wrong I could have done, I probably did.(I didn't join until my grow was already going)But these folks on here go to all of the trouble to give you a growfaq, and yet you don't read it, and give noobs advice which is wrong. It just burns me up.Why mislead? There is nothing wrong with admitting you're wrong. How else would you learn? But I don't give advice often, and when I do, I damn well triple check my facts.Original poster, listen to fdd, and fdd only.Subscribe to some of his grows. This guy knows what he's talking about.

haha you guys are funny... actually it doesn't matter at all which way you orientate the seed/tap root into the soil/media.. the plant naturally uses gravity to 'find' its way down into the soil, then the embryo with seed pod attached rises above the surface..etc
In nature those seeds just fall to the ground in any random arrangement and there still is a 50/50 chance of male/female maturation....
Its all this jonesing for a toke that growers want to get every last little detail right, but sometimes you can actually try too hard! :)
I think the key is to have some sweet herb layin around to smoke while you watch your babies grow.. have some patience, dont tamper with the embryo, smoke some weed, chill out and have fun.
good luck!

that's what i thought, regardless of how you put it in the soil the plant must naturally know which way is up
