What to do if you run out of soil room?

Hey y’all

I’m running Jinxproof’s Sativa Scream in 5 gallons of Roots lush. I transplanted them a week and a half ago and will be flipping lights in the next few days. I really don’t want to transplant them in 7 gallons. I have Build a Soil’ Build a Bloom and thinking about getting the terp tea for the last half of flowering. Can I get away with watering in once a week with the build a bloom or will I absolutely need the room. They’re in a 3x3x72”, HLG (2) 288 v2 quantum boards. I have another 12” of head room and the tops are 18” from the light. I have a worm bin, I could make tea with the castings and build a bloom to get it breaking down quicker. In my experience Organics need all the leg room they can get, unfortunately it seems mine always run out of room, even in a 12 gal SIP.

Any advice or criticism I’d welcome, just don’t be a dick

btw, the plant was in a 2 gal and got terribly root bound, so my plan was to transplant them and get them healthy then flip. I did quite a bit of pruning too

yeah I probably have to transplant. But in my experience roots do not stop growing. They are always growing until harvest time. They were definitely root bound (in 2gal), which leads me to believe that they’ll over take the 5 gal pretty quick. I can’t do anything over 7gal. Will the weekly feedings of Build a Bloom 2-5-10, terp tea .5-6-18 (towards the end) and vermicompost suffice for keeping it fed. They are micronized

If u switch to fabric pots u dont have to worry about root bound. They self prune. I grow in 1 and 3 gallon pots currently and absolutely no problems with root bound.
Rootbound was probably the wrong term. The soil was completely filled with roots, top to bottom, the whole thing is a rootball.

I haven’t bought woven pots in years, my soil dried too quickly, eventually making it hydrophobic. However it looks like the technology is better and the walls are thicker. I’m probably going to do that.

But… what can you do if you completely run out of soil space (top to bottom, all sides, completely full of roots)???

Yes what u described is root bound. U can actually cut(prune) the roots yourself. They will grow back. Plant won't miss em. They got some youtube videos on it.

Like you said, plants like lots of room when you're growing in soil. It's not like Chem based setups where you can grow huge plants with tiny root mass.

You could Probably get away with 5 gallons pots of your plants aren't huge, and you keep feeding them. Which you plan to do and have all the supplies for. So, cool. And going from 2 to 5 gallons is a nice jump.

But you are right about the roots completely filling the pot being an issue. It can be tough to get enough water In There when everything is packed super tight in the pot. To get around this you can use a stick or skewer to poke some holes in the soil, to make new channels for water to penetrate the tightly packed soil of a full pot. And then you just water real slow so the water absorbs, and often enough to keep things moist.

It's kind of a pain in the ass, but not the end of the world.

as far as watering goes, I have hydroton on the bottom of the pots, and the pots sit on hydroton that’s in a saucer (for lack of a better term). That way I can fill up the saucer and let the plant drink from that. They already need watering everyday.

Today I’m transplanting them in thick woven pots. They will most definitely run out of room and I’m afraid having two 7 gal pots will increase the RH. I have a dehuey, but they produce heat. It’s fall where I live and temps will be dropping so I could move it into the tent. As far as feeding the build a bloom is micronized so it should break down quickly. Also my soil is very very much so alive and am in the process of making LaB so that will expedite the process. Also I’ll be purchasing Brandon Rust’s K humate for the latter half of the cycle. The build a bloom is high in P but not K, I’ll need that phosphorus bump in the end. I’ll make a journal and tag you in it so you can follow along.

Thank you for the reply, I felt heard

Well, i determined they're too big and will easily outgrow those pots. I don't want to potentially be chasing deficiencies, as well this is a new type of soil medium that I haven't used. So i took 8 clones, dipped them in rooting powder and sprinkled great white myco's, 2 days ago. I still have the two plants, part of me wants to take the soil from the other plant, and put my favorite in a 15 gallon woven pot.

Doesn't make sense. Plants normally, as in dictated by millions of years of evolution, grow reproductive organs in bloom. You must be growing some of that new fangled Gmo weed that hermies due to being genetically fucked up, and smells like botanical tree terpenes instead of Cannabis acids due to being genetically fucked up. Because roots are the first thing to stop growing in bloom, regarding normal weed that people have grown for thousands of years.

Lol. Your fabric pots are drying out. There are no roots in the outer 1/3. 20 gallons of fabric is like a 13 gallon trash can. Literally zero reason to use fabbags. Unless you want to grow a 10 gallon plant in 15 gallons of Colorado hippy prayers and guyliner youtube vids.

Those plants just look hungry. What terp tea are you talking about? The one I know of is 7-1-1. And next time you order from BAS you should grab some Craft Blend too.

Could u b less of a butthole plz? This is the organics section, plz chill out ok

Or at least post an article or scientific study which supports your claim that roots stop growing in flower. To me it sounds like a very simplified view of plant biology - they focus on growing reproductive organs, therefore they don't have the time or energy to focus on growing roots - when in reality their behavior is much more nuanced and complex...

They were really rootbound, so I transplanted them in new soil and added some nutes in there.

So I took clones, but yesterday it got up to 97 degrees in the clone dome . I’m thinking about transplanting it in a 15 gal fabrics pot. The larger pots that are plastic get too tall for the tent. I’ll buy Saran Wrap and wrap the outside walls. Also the plant is really tall, too tall. Hopefully I get some clones to root and then run them again… if they’re good

How big of plastic pots are you talking about?

The plastic bag pots I was looking at were 20-22” tall. Although woven bags have some downsides to them, the 15 gallon I have is 12” tall. These plants are already very tall. I have 12” of head room left, and they’re going to stretch.

im considering cutting the tops off to get another foot. Hopefully the clones root. I have a 12 gal SIP that’s ready to rock. Also I don’t have any experience growing in the Root’s O Lush soil. I’ve been growing in Coot’s mix for the past few years and have zero complaints. I can already tell the roots will move quickly through this soil. It probably won’t need all 15 gallons, but you never know, at least I won’t run out of room and that’s what matters. On the nutrient front i’ll

The Terp Tea bloom booster is .6-5-18. It’s probably high in langbeinite, which I heard can be counter productive especially if you have Sulphur in your soil, which I do. Brandon Rust’s K humate is looking like the winner

One time instarted flowering a clone as soon as it had tiny roots to sex the plant and ill be damned if that solo cup wasnt slammed packed with roots by the time i cut it. Soooooo uhhhhhhhhh just sayin

Every time I used fabric pots I had to cut and peel the fabric from the coco. The entire thing essentially becomes a root. While they are in veg the roots start shooting out the sides, then air prune and become hella dense.
