I knew this was going to happen today but it's been like waiting for Christmas to get here. I knew it was coming but the Nevada Senate seat was just called.

Nevada’s Catherine Cortez Masto will win reelection, CNN projects, allowing Democrats to keep the Senate

Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto will win reelection in Nevada, CNN projects, clinching a critical victory that will allow Democrats to keep control of the US Senate.

Cortez Masto had long been viewed as one of the most vulnerable Democratic incumbents as she fended off a challenge from former Nevada Attorney General Adam Laxalt in a state whose economy had been hard hit by the Covid-19 pandemic and inflation.

With Cortez Masto – the first Latina senator – securing a second term, Democrats will hold 50 seats and Republicans will hold 49. Democrats are also defending a seat in Georgia, where Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock and Republican Herschel Walker are headed to a December 6 runoff. But even if Republicans pick up that seat, the chamber would still be evenly divided, allowing Vice President Kamala Harris to still hold the tie-breaking vote. Democrats were able to hold the majority, in part, because they picked up a seat in Pennsylvania, where Lt. Gov. John Fetterman, a Democrat, defeated Trump-backed Mehmet Oz in the contest to replace retiring Republican Sen. Pat Toomey.

This is awesome and it probably terrifies the loonies on the right that a Muslim could get elected to the Georgia State House.

Ruwa Romman remembers the sadness she felt as an 8-year-old girl sitting in the back of a school bus watching classmates point to her house and erupt in vicious laughter.

“There’s the bomb lab,” they jeered in yet another attempt to brand her family as terrorists.

On Tuesday, the same girl – now a 29-year-old community organizer – made history as the first known Muslim woman elected to the Georgia House of Representatives, and the first Palestinian American elected to any office in the state.

There is a man that got his start as a community organizer. He went on to become President of the United States. His name is Barack Obama.

Michigan saw record turnout for a midterm election this week, with control of the governor’s office and referendums on abortion and voting rights in the balance.

But with a heightened focus on voting problems and irregularitiesnationwide, Ann Arbor became a target for false information following reports of long lines of voters waiting to cast ballots late into the night Tuesday in the college community.

Elections officials, government watchdog groups and other experts, however, said the election process was carried out according to state law.

Here are the facts.

CLAIM: City officials in Ann Arbor were registering new voters and allowing them to vote long after the polls closed on Election Day.

THE FACTS: The false claim gained traction after a Republican candidate for Michigan secretary of state issued a lengthy statement on social media singling out the vote in Ann Arbor — a liberal bastion that’s home to the University of Michigan — as proof of election malfeasance.

“We will not tolerate the lawlessness of the Ann Arbor city clerk,” Kristina Karamo wrote in her Election Day tweet, which has since been liked or shared more than 1,200 times.

The Trump-endorsed Republican, who ended up losing to incumbent Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, doubled down on her claims Thursday in a tweet that was also widely shared.

“The Ann Arbor clerk is engaging in mass Election Crimes. Illegally registering people after 8pm,” another Twitter user wrote, echoing the false claim. “They are arrogantly breaking the law.”

But Michigan state law allows any person in line when polls close at 8 p.m. to register to vote and to cast a ballot, election officials and experts told The Associated Press this week.

“Although we say the polls are open until 8pm in MI, if you are in line before 8pm and stay in line you can vote,” Sharon Dolente, a senior advisor for Promote the Vote, wrote in an email. “The same is true if you need to register to vote first, in order to vote.”

Promote the Vote, a coalition that includes the NAACP, the League of Women Voters and the American Civil Liberties Union, coordinated an Election Day hotline and had hundreds of observers at polling locations throughout the state on Tuesday.

Dale Thomson, a political science professor at the University of Michigan in Dearborn, agreed, noting that Michigan voters in 2018 approved same-day registration, meaning voters can enroll up to and including on Election Day.

The Michigan Department of State, which oversees elections statewide, confirmed with Ann Arbor officials that all voters registered after 8 p.m. had been in line before polls closed and that each person was provided a document to verify that, said Jake Rollow, an agency spokesperson.

“Eligible American citizens have the constitutional right to register to vote and vote, and if they are in line at the 8 p.m. deadline on Election Day, they must be allowed to do so,” he wrote in an email.

Joanna Satterlee, a spokesperson for the city of Ann Arbor, said the waiting voters were handed a “ticket” in the form of a blank application to vote.

Only those in line holding the application were permitted to register and vote, she said. Staff were also present to ensure no one joined the lines after 8 p.m.

Satterlee said the city didn’t have a count for how many votes were cast by those waiting in line past 8 p.m. on Tuesday, but that the last ballot was issued shortly after 1 a.m. Wednesday.

She said the three voting locations impacted were City Hall and two sites on the University of Michigan campus, where hundreds of waiting voters were seen wrapped up in donated blankets and sipping on hot cocoa as temperatures dropped below 45 degrees.

The U.S. Department of Justice, which posted election monitors in other Michigan cities, declined to comment, and Karamo’s campaign didn’t respond to messages this week.

But the secretary of state’s office said it will work with city officials, university administrators and student leaders in Ann Arbor and other college communities to “identify and implement practices to prevent such situations” going forward.

Michigan State University on Friday said it experienced similarly long voting lines, with the last ballot cast on its East Lansing campus at 12:09 a.m. Wednesday.

“Unfortunately, long lines in some locations, most often university towns, have been a challenge in Michigan for years,” said Dolente. “This was true before same day registration was adopted. Promote the Vote looks forward to working with election officials to prevent it from happening in the future.”

CNN has a bar at the bottom showing the seats so I just leave it on mute.

Now a few more seats in the house would be nice. Surely there must be a few house republicans that will vote with their conscience and not just to block everything Biden wants to pass especially if it is good for their own people now that tRump is on his way out for good. He is taking all the blame for these mid-term results and with the 3 strikes you're out rule he ought to be gonzo.

tRump is a mad cow and like our late, great premier King Ralph Klein once said about mad cows . . . Shoot, shovel and shut up!

:peace:

A fascinating read. What caught my eye is that Boebert’s reelection is not a done deal.

(edit) it really helps when I don’t forget the link.

If she survives she'll be gone in 2024. The Democrats will dump a ton of money to grab that seat. It will turn blue by 2024. She's vulnerable which makes her a target.

I keep seeing stuff on I guess reddit urging people in boeberts district to follow up on their ballots to ensure they didn't get invalidated. It's a close one and they are getting all they can.

Democratic group launches tip line for damaging info from Trump launch
A major Democratic super PAC is launching a tip line for those attending former President Trump’s expected 2024 campaign launch to provide potentially damaging information.
American Bridge 21st Century announced the project a day before Trump is scheduled to announce at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida that he will run for another White House term in 2024.

“American Bridge is inviting folks who want to hold Trump accountable to send us tips about anything interesting or newsworthy they see at Trump’s announcement on Tuesday,” Drew Godinich, senior communications director at the organization, said in a statement to The Hill.

Goodinch said the group expects Mar-a-Lago to be “crawling with fringe weirdos and, potentially, known right wing lunatics.”
“If you’re in South Florida and want to join American Bridge in the fight to hold Trump accountable, you should grab your phone and go down to Mar-a-Lago on Tuesday,” Goodinch added.

The group has reserved an email address — [email protected] — for those who wish to send information about Trump’s campaign launch.

American Bridge 21st Century has positioned itself as the primary organization conducting opposition research and pushing back on potential 2024 Republican presidential candidates.

The group last month listed 21 Republicans it views as the likeliest GOP presidential contenders, including former Trump, several officials who served in his administration, and prominent senators and governors such as Sen. Ted Cruz (Texas) and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

The organization earlier this year accused Trump of breaking campaign finance laws, citing his spending on political funds without officially launching a presidential bid. Trump has repeatedly teased the prospect of seeking another White House term dating back to when he left office in January 2021.

Last week, he officially set a date for what he billed as a major announcement from Mar-a-Lago. Jason Miller, a longtime Trump adviser, has since confirmed Trump will use the announcement to launch a 2024 bid, even as some in the party push to move on from Trump in the wake of disappointing midterm elections.

This one’s a blatant dominionist and supremacist, above and beyond Karening.
The same can be said about every single member of the freedumbass caucus. They're still karens, they just go way beyond the basic requirements, they're 12th dan blackbelt karens...they demand to talk to the manager of the entire country, and would love nothing more than to get him fired.

That is where I think the metaphor breaks down. A Karen is a noisy, self-absorbed and colossally entitled nuisance, but not an existential threat. As seen by their long-term program of suborning the judicial (and the recent results), the Repugs have proven themselves an existential threat. They wanna be the manager.

ok, i'll cede you that point...but the major difference is ambition, not intent...

isn’t that a distinction without a difference?
the difference, to me, anyway, would be that they both are royal bitches, but one of the royal bitches wants to not only get you fired, they want to take over, while the lesser one just wants to get you fired...not much of a distinction, but it's the difference between one pile of shit and another...they aren't identical, but they both fucking stink.
