My 2023 Winter Grow

Started some Jack Herer auto-fems, growing hempy style in perlite with a soil cap.

Alternating feedings with Dyna-Gro Foliage Pro and GH Maxi-Bloom, also using a bit of cal-mag.

Using a brand new Mars Hydro TS-600 (plus a 23 watt CFL for the first 2 weeks just for the heat)

week 1

Growing in a bathroom tub, with a small space heater and a wet towel to keep the temps & humidity up....fan in the back

Nice grow. Get an hid light for the heat of it . Your wasting electricity with a heater. Get a 1000 watt metal halide for veg and you'll be walking around sweating. The cure for cold weather. I do like led in flower for quality , but I blend led and hid when it's cold to keep Temps right.

I have a 600 HPS and a 315 CMH, and I'll likely blend them with the LED in the future upcoming weeks

BTW: my heater is small and is not on often in such a small room

They look healthy. So that's what counts for sure. A metal halide for veg if it's interchangeable ballast wouldn't be very expensive. I haven't used cmh before. I have heard good things about them though. I love the cold weather for growing though.

Week 4 - they are doing okay, not great but okay.
Will likely give the solo cup gal to a buddy, as we are only legally allowed 4 plants



It's warmed up enough so I don't need to run the heater...the wet towel is keeping the RH around 60%

What is your reason for the soil cap on top of perlite? Evaporation control?

What is your reason for the soil cap on top of perlite? Evaporation control?

The soil cap provides a light barrier so your roots can develop closer to the top.
It provides nutrients during the early days when not using normal nutes.
Helps contain the perlite as I tip the plant over to drain the leftover water/nutes before adding fresh water/nutes

I also used a soil core to plant the seeds in, mostly because I didn't have any rock-wool

Week 5 - I'm surprised that I don't see pre-flowers yet, so I upgraded the LED to a 315 CMH



Still haven't got rid of the little solo cup

Moved the gals to my 4.5 x 4.5 grow tent, using the 315 watt CMH

I'm only legally allowed 4 plants, so the solo cup was suppose to go to a friend but that hasn't happened.

The cruel act would be to kill it, but I have a hard time doing such an evil act.

Also these plants are hempy, so I'm not sure how that would take to a transplant

I added my LED lights to the mix (100w on the left, 19w on the right)



BTW: I have found a new home for the little gal in the solo cup, my buddy just bought a 30w LED so it should work out well for him.

We had some decent sunshine, so I gave one of the gals some fun in the sun



A fair few leaves are turning brown on me....we are having a cold snap, the room is on the cool & dry side

I don't think so as I have used the 315 CMH several times before....I keep it 24 inches at first, then down to 18 inches

I leaning more towards too low of pH issue or maybe too strong of nutes but most likely cool temps/low RH....but just not really sure.

I pissed around with several nute combination, including Dyna gro, maxi-grow and maxibloom ...and cal-mag.

Thing did go downhill when I moved to the grow-tent in the spare bedroom..... I have to leave a window open to vent out and we have had a very cool winter so my temps & RH have been less than ideal (I do run 24/0 to keep the temps from falling too low).

My temps & RH were much lower compared to the bathroom which has better environment conditions as I vent out via the bathroom exhaust fan
