i'm starting to resemble that remark :(
i see very little in the current geopolitical situation that anyone should feel joy about. things are bad, and look like they're going to get bad enough to kill off a LOT of people before fuck face fascists will even admit there is a problem. maybe we'll get lucky and most of them will die early.
that’s the spirit!

honesty isn't popular with most people...but the truth is the truth, whether they like it or not.
i only have a few friends, but they're good friends, because we tell each other the truth, not what we want to hear.
a recent exchange...my friend "what do you think of my new truck?" me "i never realized you had such a small dick..."
then i oohed and ahhed over his new f150, but we both knew i thought it was a compensater

I once really, and I mean really, pissed a guy off who’d bought the big Infiniti sedan when those were a thing thirty-some years ago. I asked him “how’s the fuckin’ Datsun?”

~sigh~ sometimes the world is not ready for my art.

I think we need to track burner phones and sim cards better with a picture and ID upon purchase.
So you all up to getting your microchip implanted then? Must be if you think blocking more places where a person can get some privacy is a good idea.

Sure it sux that some people are going to use that for disgusting actions but we're already heading for Orwell's 1984 fast enough. Too damn fast as far as I'm concerned.

My old man told me about the stink raised when social insurance numbers first started. People were all, "You're not numbering me like the Nazis did the Jews!" and shit like that. Now people just splash their lives all over the web as the last vestiges of a free world fade away.

Cashless society next so another reason to get microchipped in case you lose your phone so they don't lose track of you.

Glad I'll be gone before all the gates are locked. :(

A reduction in anonymous death threats, a terrorist act. Just accountability, one used to have to show ID to get a phone, have an address too, it is easy to take a photo of those purchasing phones and cards, especially burner phones and hold them for a set period of time. An old cellphone to take a picture of the customer and the ID presented should do, your internet connection is tied to you through your ISP. It won't eliminate it, but it will reduce the volume by reducing access to morons and catch those who are stupid. This activity has social costs and is a threat to liberal democracy, threaten people in minor offices until they quit out of fear and disgust, then get your own fascist elected. This strategy is being used in the states on elected officials and education and health officials too, politics by violence, otherwise known as fascism.
Burner phones are purchased at Walmart almost exclusively. Walmart has working video they keep forever. Burner phone has a serial number. Burner phone has to be activated from a real phone not another burner. Burner phones ping off towers just like everything else. Criminals use burners because they think they can't be track- but they can..Burners call regular phones leaving that info behind.

The criminal always makes this mistake in America.

I hold this view as well. I get the argument and reasoning, but I don't think we should give up rights to privacy for protection. If you give up various rights to the government that doesn't give you much room if a shit government takes over. It is not a safe bet to assume things will work out in a utopian manner.

Again, beware your Social Security..with simple temporary assignments, not even having to be vetted..Treasury, IRS and SS..he had all three..the IRS never gave him his obligatory audit that every president receives. Saul at SS wouldn't leave when Biden fired him..led off campus I understand.

You pay 7.65%, sure would be a kick in the pants to never receive your retirement money because we have a Dictator..like I almost didn't..I'm trying to sound the warning because I personally experienced.

We need a Social Security Protection Act so that a bad actor cannot just cut everyone off and ohhhh, I don't know..KEEP THE MONEY FOR THEMSELVES?

I left a remark with Beau of the Fifth Column challenging him on this subject- Righties watch him and they need to have the bejesus scared out of them.

there is nothing wrong with privacy.
the problem is that people commit crimes and use these cheap and disposable phones to commit those crimes.
it not about privacy, and never has been. they do not have guys sitting in a room listening to peoples conversations, they only listen if they get a search warrant...if you aren't doing anything to warrant a search warrant, then they just don't have time for you. seriously. they're overworked and understaffed, they give a fuck about anyone not under criminal investigation.
and, really, what legitimate reason is there to have a "burner phone" ?....none that i can see.

Well I like my weird scenario examples. You're correct broadly speaking...but whatabout...

Let's say we are in an alternative timeline where trump won. He has pretty overwhelming support from all areas of law enforcement, certain types of folks are attracted to that line of work. You want to lead some sort of protest...maybe you are Greta. I see a major problem with having your opposition have full and complete access to all your communication. It's not like they won't leak your wearabouts to groups they are affiliated with. Or perhaps permits don't get issued once it's found out you will be involved with an event. Etc etc.

*I am ignoring that it happens anyway, it's like when the patriot act came around. That "...first time" meme was fitting as lots of leftist groups got spied on.

Our growing connectedness works against your resistance scenario. That connectedness is making the privacy we had only half a century ago evaporate like a road puddle in Arizona.

That could cut both ways. It makes it harder to mount an overthrow. But, should one succeed, it leaves much thinner margins bordering the “surveillance space” for a resistance to do its thing. We live, alas, in interesting times.

I dont think we should give in or do anything to aid that though. I'm good with having less resources to combat something I don't like in order to neuter the stuff I don't likes ability to do me harm. I don't want to end up in the situation of trying to one up the next/previous people in terms of using the law and rules to harm the opposition.

Edit: ugh, this is the worst written thing I have written. Even George Santos makes fun of my word salad.

Well, George Santos is deservedly proud of his second Michelin star.

Abused spouse trying to keep her abuser from finding her but wanting to keep in touch with support is one example of a need for such a device and I'm sure there are many more legitimate reasons.

I'm not doing anything particularly incriminating but I keep the location off on my phone all the time, disconnected the OnStar on my car and only surf the web with ProtonVPN running before I fire up my browser. FireFox is my choice of browser and StartPage is my choice of search engine for more privacy.

If I go to the city to do some shopping I take cash out at the bank and pay cash all day so I'm not giving away valuable info. The c/l wife signs up for all the discount cards using her own last name.

You're not really paranoid when they really are out to get you. :)

Why? Why all the fear of lack of privacy? I get it in times of need, like running a load up to Canada from Texas but your old and I assume not doing anything that bad (like me lol). I don’t give a fuck if someone wants to follow my ass anymore. They may want to pack a lunch, it’s gonna be a boring ride lol.
