A lot of people do very little thinking and are not good at it, they operate off emotion and react. The standard formula is to enrage to engage, anger shuts the brain down even more and narrows the focus. So, spin them a yarn sure to enrage and then feed them the "cause" of the problem and all of their problems. Most people hate change, change causes suffering, so promise to stop change and even reverse the clock to a past seen with rose colored glasses.
There is some hope, many countries and some US states are offering "media awareness" courses, NJ is planning it. This can help kids to pick out the bullshit from the real online and tell them about the dangers of social media etc. When coupled with programs like mindful schools for emotional/social education, it can have a profound impact on the next generation.
