a lot of people work jobs with no strike. I spent years working for a State agency with a no-strike clause in our contract. We were subject to mandatory unlimited 12hr days without notice. Worked for years without pay raises while benefits eroded with each new contract. work furloughs anytime they decided. Worked a straight 10hr shift without a lunch time or break time. Had to request vacation12 months in advance. Retired after 25 years. Yes we had a union. Welcome to the California Dept of Corrections......so. PJ as you are a resident of California, I was working for you.

Sounds like a crappy union. We've had this convo already though. I work for the state too. Most no-strike no-lockout clauses are for times when the contract is in force, not during negotiations, which is when this was an issue. Of course you don't strike during an active agreement, you strike when you are negotiating and the employer is playing hardball. In reality the ability to withhold labor is the only strength any union really has. Once you remove that, you only have the shell of the appearance of a union, but with no real power.

If it's Biden vs Trump in 2024, I will vote for a third party, and I'm sure that whoever that is, will be a bigger supporter of labor than Biden ever was.

Desperate times; desperate measures and if the President is pressed again, he will step up to the plate.

Biden is strong; Trump weak. Trump is not irrelevant, he's announced his bid for 2024. Should we not believe him?

Exactly. At a time when inflation is the major concern in America due in large part to covid supply chain issues, it would have been political suicide for Biden to allow the railways to be shut down.

That doesn't change the fact that Biden is a friend to labor and that the GOP default position is the opposite of that. The GOP going back at least to Nixon have courted labor voters with Culture War issues. For Nixon, it was the hippies and blacks who were the cultural enemies of the time. Today its much the same with different labels. On the actual issues, though, the GOP is opposed to unions and the way they shift power away from shareholders. Unions are bad for business but the Culture War issues are the GOP's version of Dug's distraction by squirrels. Support for unions and labor is built into the political DNA of the Democratic Party. The GOP calls it socialism.

I agree, but the dems don't do a good job of messaging on the topic. They should make efforts to shore up support to keep a 2016 from happening again. I do think the old resentment over nafta was a big influence in the outcome then and they take union members support for granted. Perception and feelz play a role, republicans have done a good job of painting the dems as the elite party only out for the rich.

My daughter tried to organize at a Trader Joe's and was promptly fired- union busting.

While being a friend to labor, the President did what was right for the whole country- the mark of a great leader..to keep it going after all the complaints of inflation, high gas, baby formula shortage, shelf shortages from containers sitting in the ocean waiting for truckers, trucker convoy America and Canada.

Speaking of trains, that wreck in Ohio spewing poison had a meeting and non of the Railroad people showed 'out of an abundance of caution for Railroad employees.' Jesus!

And yet somehow the Billionaire Tax Cut bill was passed in 2017- a GOP year.
