I found a stash of WW2 rats while on isolated duty in the Aleutians in the 70's, the food sucked but was edible but 5 cigs were horrible.
When my dad was in Korea they had cigarettes in the rations and they each got a ration of booze. If I remember right it was like a case of beer or a bottle of liquor a week. The guys that didn't drink would trade booze to the guys that did so building up a surplus was easy.
Fast forward 50 years to my service and no tobacco in training, no tobacco in the hangar and if you smelled like booze during PT(physical training) at 6 AM from drinking heavy the night before they'd give you a breathalyzer in formation. Anything over double zeros and you were catching an Article 15 and possibly getting kicked out of aviation. How times change lol.
