It's the only town I can think of where I know multiple people who had cops approach them and just say "get the fuck out of here" when they accidentally stopped for gas or even just hopped off the interstate at the wrong exit and were turning around. "You don't look like a crackhead, get the fuck out." "Uhhh...OK, which way back to the interstate sir."

Edit: it came about while talking to people at work and a guy grew up in Gary, IN. He was also of the opinion east stl was the worst. "Michael Jackson was from my town and it was the 80s, Gary was great...oh but the cops kicked me out of east stl for buying gas, fuck that place."
