So, Winter shuts down & Spring is upon us.
Finally got mostly caught up with the season’s shows, gotta say they’re mostly pretty good

While I enjoyed Fruits of Evolution 1st drop, this bunch is just not enjoyable for me anymore

it hard to say much about any one of the crop, because they all seem…more confident, more interesting.

an example: a bunch of ‘sekai’ stories - MC gets reborn, etc, just not to a *different* world…Eminence in Shadow is one, Strongest Exorcist, is another. Reborn to Master the Sword. Misfit of Demon Academy. All have flaws, but they’re all *stronger* - more tightly plotted, better written, more balanced. Not like everyone’s upped their game, more like they’re all TRYING hard to level up. The efforts show…but it’s rocky.

Misfit was a sure hit, but it started odd, got up helpfully weird, then no more episodes - ep 6 & then it stopped. Master the Sword sounded much better than it views: the whole thing seems like a technical exercise. It’s capably done, and some bits of it are great, but except for the MC being reborn as a girl, they bring absolutely nothing interesting in the way of story, storytelling, or character…nor have they made any effort to bring the old man’s gender, current or former, into play (now an incredibly hot swordswoman), so all the humor is teacher-approved for grade school. To top it all off, it moves too fast AND nothing really happens

the other two pay better. Eminence in Shadow may or may not be a real mess (I honestly don’t know), but it’s mesmerizing to watch, gorgeously done, and I haven’t figured out exactly what supposed to be going on (or so it feels). I owe it a complete uninterrupted viewing (& vice versa). The Worlds Greatest Reincarnated collection now includes an exorcist. The best thing about this one is the sheer competence involved. It’s full of small surprises, the kind that sink in over time…and one of the surprises is how well they have crafted the world, the characters, and the set-up for the ongoing story. It may never rise to the level of favorite, it’s worth a look.

the real standouts are as usual off the wall; maybe the best is Ningen Fujin (aka Party of Cynics Wins All). Synopsis: disillusioned adventurers for a bond of mutual distrust & proceed to make a name for themselves. Characters AND development are top-notch, the backstories are essential, focused & contributory. Maybe the best 2nd-season setup I’ve ever seen. Surreptitiously great.

It has competition, too: Handyman Saitou in Another World is your more isekai isekai, but Saitou isn’t your more-isekai kind of hero. Very well balanced between story, development, action & humor - even some very-low-key romance. Each episode is itself episodic, the characters are caricatures but better than that. Like Ningen Fujin, it’s not so much an ‘adult story’ as a story for an adult audience (no ecchi or fan-service here), so there’s interplay between shonen & seinen elements. A real surprise.

The trend toward more stories (and/or storytelling) offering differing layers & POVs shows up in The Angel Next Door is Spoiling Me Rotten. Again, maybe it’s a slightly older POV, but this high school romance is like nothing else. Slice of life, but nothing played for cheap reacts or sugar. Puts a new, clear-eyed shine on ‘wholesome’ with a more direct look at a developing relationship than almost all the rest I‘ve seen. Very smart, very observant, quite revealing in ways…and another almost perfect job with characters & development, pacing, storytelling, and 2nd-season setup. Where another show would have gaffed and joked its way thru 3 seasons before anybody even liked anybody, this takes a more courageous approach, and season 2 is all set up. A lighter-hearted ‘version’ back in summer was More Than Married but Less Than Lovers…which I liked for many of the same reasons, though the shows aren’t similar otherwise.

There’s a bunch I didn’t see, because life. I’ll get to most of them eventually.

spring looks great: second seasons for Dr. Stone, Konosuba, Ranking of Kings, Tonikawa, Ancient Magus’ Bride, Vinland Saga.

First seasons for Hell’s Paradise, I Got a Cheat Skill in Another World, My One-Hit-Kill Sister, Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts, Rokudo’s Bad Girls,Summoned to Another World for The Second Time, The Aristocrat’s Otherworldy Adventure. X & Y, Why Raeliana Ended Up in The Duke’s Mansion. the Legendary Hero is Dead!, Yuri is My Job!

Thanks for your patience, as always…hope y’all are fit, happy, well-loved & well-entertained!

So far I’m really liking the new season…like I mentioned, it’s like the storytelling has matured, gone up a level.

Hell’s Paradise is an effing MUST. Gorgeous, fluid, layered, MAPPA in show-off mode. This could be one those animes…

The Aristocrat’s Otherworldly Adventure is a heavy tropic isekai, not new, except that it’s *this* well done. Light & humorous so far

I Got A Cheat in Another World & Became Unrivaled in the Real World, Too is exactly what it says, apparently, but again, very well put-together - and the tone of it, tackling the biggest what-if in anime, is as engaging as the ones that pull me in the strongest. NOT light, or funny, but not dull despite the main trope - looking surprisingly suspenseful so far.

PSA: Summertime Rendering is running on Hulu. Glad to find it, looks good so far

Budman, I’m sorry hear what your wife is going through. I’ll keep a candle lit. One for the pup, too. One for you if you want it.

Shit’s been wild all over, I guess. I DO hope y’all are holding up at least as well as I am. Glad to ‘see’ everybody…welcome to new folks!
