When does flowering begin? aus

Hi guys i know its been asked a thousand times before but i cant find a specific answer. I have a few double gums outside one i know is female and is about 1.2 meters tall and pretty lanky. I was just wondering when they begin flowering in the southern hemisphere. Is it after the summer solstice or when the daylight hours gets closer to 12 - 12. The reason being i want to top her because im afraid shel get to big. But read its not good to top them to soon to the flowering period. Thanks in advance ill put some pics up tommorow.

yes it is usually after the summer but u can force them to flower bye just putting them under 100% shade for eg. under neath a house for 2 -3 days and it will strart flowering then back out in the sun or a black garbage bag and also some strains flower quickly

your in a bit of bind there then, unless you force flowering and continue it, it will probably be 4 months before floweing will commence naturally for you maybe more. Depending on the strain as liitle as 10 hours darkness will trigger flowering . Top away.

i put it in complete darkens for about 2-3 days and then bring it out in the sun again?

No, you would leave them outside for no more than 12-13 hours, and bring it indoors into TOTAL darkness for 11-12 hours this will force flowering to begin. You would have to continue that as long as your outdoor light is more than 12-13 hours (guesstimate May '09) or they will revert back to vegetative state or worse hermie on you.

Yeah thanks cant really put them in the shade as there planted in the ground. So just to confirm they start to flower when they get more than 10 hours darkness not when the days begin to get shorter (summer solstice in my area is 21st of Dec). On January the 16 th they will be getting exactly 14 hours of day and 10 of night. peace

That's the earliest you could expect flowering to commence, some strains would require even more hours of darkness. If you were growing an equtorial landrace species it would need 12 1/2 hours darkness.

and then wait the day
and cover back up at 6pm the next day
and so on.

yeah you got it, your plant is too small to be forcing into bloom right now anyways (all I can see is the thumbnail, image host requires a membership). I assumed you were growing in a pot or pail so that you could bring it indoors. That's how I force flowering during our summer. I know that's not practical for most people though.
Your light seal has to be perfect or it will fail. A near impossible task. Heat buildup will probably cook the plant.

ok when it get to about 50-60cm..i will force it to flower.
i can just keep it in a pot in my dark closet.

Too big, now I have to scroll to get the quote button. Anyways I'd veg that another month if I was you, doesn't look like it's getting a lot of light. I'd be careful when you do put it outside at first, don't give it more than a 15 minutes of sunlight the first day and double that up each day so that it can build up resistance to the sunlight's UV.
