Oregon dispensaries may not suck. But I'll tell you Arizona dispensaries put out the most disgusting bud. I tried every grower in the state, looking for someone to team up with. I'm fairly certain the only decent bud I picked up was imported from Oregon, the stuff that wouldn't pass there. You try the same grower a 2nd time and the bud is completely different, goes straight in the trash. People claim the wax is good. It's had fake terpenes added when I've tried it. Tasted nothing like cannabis resin. Maybe they import half their concentrate from Oregon to. Or maybe the local smokers think adding limonene to bho makes it taste good. It doesn't.
Heres a comprehensive explanation of why dispensary weed sucks:
1) Alot of the shit is overfed with synthesized phosphorus and calcium which the plant can't metabolize properly, especially under artifical lights which lack the spectral balance to signal seasonal metabolic changes. You get those nasty 'hydro' flavors; Dmt/pcp/meth pipe/garden hose/fishing lure/koosh ball/chinese plastic, weird chemicals smells. You can buy a dozen strains from those growers and it all smells the same. People in my state call that "gas" and think it's awesome. I call it trash, and throw it in the trash, because it is trash. I had strain once with a very distinct flavor. I fed it excess calphos once and it got that plastic resin smell 3 hours later. It never recovered. Completely unrecognizable, smelled like dispo weed. There's a reason bones are slow release in nature. Grinding that shit up and mixing it with acids is too much for hyperaccumulators like Cannabis to metabolize. It alters the plants metabolism, alters the phospholipids in the plant.
2) I have 2 skunk strains that smelled like skunk outdoors when I grew guerilla. Indoors after moving they smelled like Sonic Drive thru. Like Supersonic cheeseburger pickles mustard and cheddar peppers straight out of their dirty ass deep frier. I put a couple cuttings in a window sill and let them flower in the fall. They turned skunky again. Green glass only blocks 10% of UV. My led had zero Uv. Light spectrum obviously has an impact. I got rid of the shitty led lights everyone had recommended and got custom QBs built with supplemental florescent for uvb. Every legal grow I look at running Led has shitty "all purpose" spectrum, which grows poor roots in veg, and poor buds in bloom. Not even 730nm in most. If you see a grow without dedicated bloom lights (heavy red with supplemental 10000K or uvb bulbs) don't smoke it.
3) Feeding salts leads to an inherent carbon deficiency. Are any of these guys feeding carbs to make up for the lack of soluble carbons and organic chelates? Are any running CO2? Doesn't seem like it. They feed Nitrates, the worst fertilizer there is. There is no left over carbon for flavor. Carbon makes terpenoids, carboxylic acids, fats, sugars, stuff that makes bud smoke good. Taste and aroma largely derive from the lipoxygenase pathway in Cannabis, and salt grown weed is inherently low in lipids to convert into flavor molecules.
4) Apparently there's a myth that sulfur isn't important to Cannabis, because you can't see leaf deficiency symptoms in bloom, as there is no fast new growth to show it. Most flavor compounds in Cannabis derive from sulfur and sulfur bearing amino acids. This is one reason smelly organics help flavor, they contain thiosulfates.
5) All these legal grows feed calnit. It's worth mentioning again because it shows these growers have zero clue what they are doing. Again, Nitrate metabolism takes a huge amount of energy away from flavor production. The end of Nitrate metabolism is amino acid protein. If these grows fed amino acids instead of nitrates, they would save the plant massive amounts of energy that can be used for flavor production. And with the typical low input of sulfur, none of the aminos synthesized from synthetic nitrate contain sulfur. Quality Cannabis contains high levels of methionine, cysteine, glutathione, not nitrate nitrite and ammonium. Nitrate and ammonium are also what attract most pests and molds.
6) Excess calcium is horrible for Cannabis quality. Calcium carbonate is horrible for Cannabis quality. Local tap water is over 500ppm. Every legal grower adds CalnitMag, just because. When you feed excess calcium, the plant cannot uptake the quality molecule; potassium. Potassium metabolism gives bud its sour flavor. 'Nute burn' is almost always potassium deficiency/calcium toxicity. Cannabis uptakes calcium extremely easily and most supposed calcium deficiencies are actually a boron deficiency, usually caused by excess calmag. Calcium makes bud taste bad, as it tastes like minerals/metals/medicines on its own, and forms disgusting calcium soaps and calcium salts when it attaches to lipids in the plant. Calcium Oxalate from excess calcium is called 'gold fleck' in tomato for example. Most legal bud, under the microscope shows that trichome cell walls are composed largely of calcium carbonate, not silica. This carbonate becomes active when the trichome stretches and shrinks, and neutralizes the carboxylic acids that the characteristic cannabis aromas come from. Weed smells like carboxylic acids and thiols, not aroma therapy vape pen terpenes. Go mix carbonate (baking soda) and ethanoic acid (vinegar), you'll see what excess carbonate does to the vinegar. Skilled growers use silicate, not carbonate, when they need to adjust ph. And they don't use 900ppm tap water. A lot of experienced growers spray silica to keep carbonate from forming in trichome cell walls at all costs. Legal growers, in my state, have no idea why silica products exist. Lots of breeders also seem to think carbonate trichs are awesome. Oreoz anyone?
7) Pesticides pesticides pesticides. My God the fucking pesticides. The only reason bugs and mold attack a crop is because of slow metabolism. When you feed Nitrate for example, but don't feed the proper enzymes and enzyme cofactors to metabolize Nitrate quickly, nature assumes your crop is dying, and comes to help decompose it. A vast portion of retail Cannabis in my state perceivably smells like either chemical or organic pesticides. If you spray your buds with either, you need to go. As a caregiver for cancer patients, fuck you, you deserve to be banned from the industry and charged in criminal court. Learn to grow a fucking plant. I haven't met a legal grower yet who knows the first thing about plant health. They always run to pesticides as bandaids instead of growing healthy crops that never need them. I promise, taking a nutrition course and doing intermittent sap testing is cheaper than spraying shit weed worth $15 a lb to a distillate outfit.
Drying and curing. No one in the legal sector seems to grasp that cannabis requires oxygen to cure. This is the purpose of burping jars. Most growers and smokers of legal Cannabis cannot tell the difference between bullshit and smokable bud, because anything clean enough to smoke has been dried and sealed up, never to be burped. Lipoxygenase doesn't happen. Climacteric respiration doesn't happen. The bud stays uncurred, and smelling like unmetabolized nutes/earth half the time. Some of the highest ranked Cannabis in my state smells like organic pesticides, because the small minority of clean bud never is harvested, dried, and cured correctly. You have to burp that shit, it takes 5 seconds per 10lb bag. Burping is not about moisture content. Quality herb should be low moisture, high grease, with tons of lipid derived volatiles. The uneducated people who buy legal weed would rather smell the weird dairy smells from bacillus sprays, fish smells from Organocide, or phosphobooster smells, than nothing at all. And they prefer it wet, because they've never seen oily greasy fatty bud before.
9) Genetics. The way most breeders and professional growers fertilize their plants, strains like Gorilla Glue beat out old school Skunk every time. Why? Because Gorilla Glue can tolerate the shitty fertilizer profiles everyone uses, and still turn out smokable. Gorilla Glue is not a good strain. But when you feed 10 strains an excess of calcium for example, Gorilla Glue will turn out best, as the calcium has a less detrimental effect on GG than it does the 9 better strains. Cannabis breeders really have no idea what they are doing, and often select for negative features such as vape pen terpenes, carbonate trichome stalks, purple pigments, and biomass. This will all change someday, as all these closet breeders who send out free seeds to random people for 'testing', will be a joke when marker assisted operations who actually know what to look for go online (federal legalization on the US can't happen soon enough).
