War

Bakhmut is important symbolically to the Russians, so if they start an operation there after the Russians have culminated and take a lot of turf, it should draw in more Russian forces for political reasons in Moscow. Once they pull forces from other places to keep the offensive in Bakhmut from over running them, the Ukrainians will strike somewhere else and drive for a railhead supplying a sector and force them to defend that, then perhaps the real offensive blitzkrieg will begin in the south. Right now, it appears to be misdirection and trying to get the Russians to spread troops around and thin them out around their true targets.

I like the idea of shooting fish in a barrel. Encircle them in Bakhmut and do not let them flee.
Whatever will suck in the most Russians for the least cost, and these are not the offensive troops the Ukrainians are holding back, but reenforced units that were defending there already. They are poking them with the left hand while holding a big stick behind their back in their right hand. Attacking the Russian rail logistics is vital, I say bridges, but they say rail power stations and railheads with long range weapons, which appears to make little sense. Maybe they don't want to destroy their own rail bridges and can't attack those inside Russia as part of the deal for the weapons, except for the Kerch bridge. I think with that one they will want to take out the rail bridge and leave the road bridges up for now, since lots of Russians and loyalists are using it to leave Crimea, helping to win the peace after the war.

The UK has been very aggressive with the Russians, maybe Vlad shouldn't have used weapons of mass destruction as weapons of assassination on their territory. Vlad made many enemies; they accumulate and are now piling on. The situation has reached the point where American help would not be required for much longer as Russia has been bled to the point of collapse.

"I'm really pleased that Britain has stepped forward at this time. We require the United States now to follow suit. They have the weapons systems."

The US and other NATO countries should supply weapons similar to the missile sent to Ukraine by Britain, Tobias Ellwood tells #timesradio

Russia's fighting power is exhausted in Ukraine - here's why | Defence in Depth

Moscow’s Victory Day parade held on May 9 was notable for the lack of military hardware on display.

It’s supposed to remember and respect the Second World War generation, but Putin and Soviet leaders before him have used it as a means of expressing power and prestige.

So it was surprising that the only tank on the parade was an 80-year-old T-34 from the Second World War.

Should we laugh at such a poor display of Russian military might? How powerful is Russia's armed forces and how can we objectively assess the state of Putin’s army?

I think Zeihan is reading more into russian motives than is there to read.
putin may perceive this as an existential struggle, but the average russian does not.
If putin can be removed from power, and replaced with someone who doesn't have delusions of empire,
they could start their recovery soon after Ukraine starts theirs, and much of the fallout could be avoided.

It will be an existential struggle. There is no way Ukraine will accept Russia on their land, Russia (Putin) can not be seen as losers as that would be the end of Putin.
