The only way to "freeze" it would be for Russia to get the fuck out of all of Ukraine and negotiate for a peace without Putin. If not, they will kick the Russians out and continue the war in other places and ways, many of them clandestine. The west will help them build a modern airforce and air defense system that will keep the Russians out and they will develop their own long-range weapons to strike Russian rail infrastructure deep inside Russia. Even if Vlad signs a peace with Ukraine, it won't include Georgia, Belarus and other places where they will continue to bleed Russia white, it won't include inside Russia either. If the Russians don't sign a peace treaty with Ukraine and without Putin in charge, then Ukraine will be a base of operations for the regime's many enemies including internal ones.
A peace treaty could come with a demand to turn war criminals over to the Hague and regime change, since the current regime cannot be trusted to keep their agreements, they are currently breaking several and international law. The only negotiations the law has with criminals are the details of how they are gonna surrender and submit to it. It will send a powerful message to the assholes of the world including Xi and his regime, having nukes might not help them to avoid justice or death.

It could end up being a condition for a peace deal, one they might end up desperately needing. I don't see a peace deal while Putin is in power, and I don't see one without them returning kidnapped Ukrainian kids either. Peace might be harder for Russia to obtain than merely returning to their 1991 borders. If they can't be brought to justice, Ukraine might want to hunt the murders down inside Russia and might not sign a peace until they do. Let the sonofabitches roast for a while. Revolution in Russia might be desirable and the only way to effect political change in Russia and break up what's left of the evil empire.

We signed on to the international court and we have a few islands up north that might do, one we split with Demark recently. With the glaciers retreating there is new land opening up in Greenland all the time and since Trump won't be buying the place land prices are cheap!

Even Ellesmere is a garden spot by comparison, and it’s likely within kayak range of a Tims and a Wawa.

You would not want to swim there and even a mile might as well be a hundred. I'm sure Ukraine would be willing to build a prison with some of the confiscated Russian money so finding a place for them to die in should not be an issue.

Not for long at the rate of climate change! We are just now starting to get leaves on the trees here in NS, longer falls though, and generally no snow until Christmas or the new year. Ukraine is at about the same latitude as here and the leaves have been out there for a month. We are well south of London in the UK and Scotland is about the same latitude as Baffin Island!
