These are regular vehicles for everyday use, not sports cars where fully independent suspension has been around for a while and transversely mounted FWD cars with rear independent suspension are a recent innovation and save space. A car with independent suspension will perform better, but the point was about sprung weight, and a traditional rear axle has a lot. In many EVs there are transversely mounted rear motor(s), though with CV shafts driving the wheels.

I am talking about regular cars for daily use, like Honda Civics or small four-door VWs. It is a sufficiently contested customer space that a serious performance/safety/ride comfort ding that comes with multiplying the unsprung mass is really not an option. For pickups or delivery vans, perhaps different case. But for a passenger machine, there will be considerable loss of stability under transient loads, such as encountered in a panic avoidance maneuver. Reducing the safe performance envelope is a Bad Idea imo.

To summarize, I don’t think hub motors confer a benefit that buys back the detriment to the car’s road manners.

That might be fun to watch.

One thing though (imo) that suggests that the engineers are not the shot-callers is the popularity of SUVs. They make engineering antisense: resource-hungrier in manufacture, less efficient to operate and less stable than proper cars, but the marketers love the things and their higher per-unit profit. People can be dumb.

On the surface it seems like a good idea, saves water and cools panels while using wasted space. Perhaps leave some gaps between the panels to let some light through and to ease maintenance concerns. I see in CA they plan on using a saltwater redux flow battery for long term storage of the power generated.

Thats me. Im commited to my next purchase being an EV, budget and needs being what they are I will be buy a vehical in the 4-7 year age range. The economey evs with suitable range are the volt and the leaf both ran fisrt generation 2012-2018 with 3rd gen set to be realsed in 24/25. I hope i can milk enough life out of my 2012 fit so i have a more robust market of suitable options when its time for my new car.

There is one ev charging station at my apartment complex of approximately 300 apartments. I have been living here 3 weeks and not one car have I ever seen charging . I never see ev cars here. Yet another town is the USA that has no interest in EV.

Don’t even seem to have enough money to provide clean drinking water to people. Just read 2 articles about contaminated water in Helena-west Helena Arkansas and many small trailer parks in Colorado, including Aspen, where people have undrinkable water, some for years. No one wants to fix it for them. Many folks in the USA live in trailers because living in a trailer costs$600 a month compared to the average rent of $2,200 in an apartment complex or small house. Things are only going to get worse . And…no one talks about….about all the heat that is being caused by the artillery and weapons and bombing going on from the Ukraine war. That war needs to end Now. I will vote in a new President if they promise to stop that shit.

it’ll be a lot less cool if it turns out that you need a megawatt-plus wondercharger to hit those marks, and pay $100 a charge.

Assuming a 200-kWh battery and “better than industry average” 5 miles per kWh, that’s still $70 a full charge from home, without paying the charging-station markup. I pay less to go a mile in my gasser, at $4.59(9) a gallon.

Dammit guys: the way forward is efficiency.
